When Romney rambled during the second presidential debate that he looked at "binders full of women" to add to his cabinet back when he was governor of Massachusetts, he unwittingly created an instant pop culture phenomenon. These, helpfully aggregated by the Guardian, included a Tumblr page, a Facebook group with over 20,000 likes and the #bindersfullofwomen hashtag on Twitter. The "binders" comment resonated so loudly, the Guardian says, because "it was tone deaf, condescending and out of touch with the actual economic issues that women are so bothered about. The phrase objectified and dehumanized women." But the presidential hopeful also helped create and expand the Staples stationery chain when he worked for private equity firm Bain Capital. So maybe he just has an overriding obsession with office equipment.
