The revolution of genetic medicine—the ability to treat or prevent disease by fiddling with genetic code—is here, and it’s largely taking place outside big pharmaceutical companies. Many of these companies spun off from academic institutions and are spending on R&D until they can hopefully get a product on the market or be acquired by a larger company.
