Instagram said today that it has 300 million monthly active users, which is 100 million more than it had three quarters ago. With this surge in growth, the photo-sharing app’s user base is now bigger than the 284 million Twitter reported in October for its third-quarter average.

Twitter pre-dates the Facebook subsidiary by four years, but its slow rate of growth has concerned investors since the company went public last November. The social network has yet to report its user figures for the most recent quarter, but if its growth in monthly active users mirrors last quarter’s, its user base would rise to 297 million.
