Normally, images showing a crowd being hosed down might seem alarming, perhaps violent. But in the case of La Tomatina, the massive annual summer food fight in Buñol, Spain, they’re actually gleeful.

Each year on the last Wednesday in August, thousands visit this town in Valencia to throw somewhere between 150 and 175 tons of squashed tomatoes at each other. The subject of today’s (Aug. 26) adorable Spanish Google Doodle, it’s a tradition thought to have origins in a real food fight between two boys in 1945. See photos from this year’s exuberant occasion below.

Crowds throw tons of ripe tomatoes at each other and are soaked with smashed tomatoes and juice in just a few minutes. The worldwide known festival, that has charged an entrance fee during the past three years to limit it's capacity, attracts numerous foreign youths to join in the funny tomato-fight. This year, the traditional battle holds it's 70th edition and will count with a record of 150 tons of tomatoes.
