Airbnb gives a glimpse into how the ultra-rich are ringing in the new year

Ringing in 2016 with champagne and fireworks? So typical. For the ultra-rich, their New Year’s Eve plans involve castles, boats, and private islands, according to data from Airbnb released today (Dec. 17).

The home-rental site says New Year’s Eve will be its busiest night of the year. It estimates that more than a million people from 170 countries will stay in accommodations booked using its service. Globally, New York City will be the most popular destination for travelers using Airbnb, followed by Paris, London, Sydney, and Barcelona.

And travelers aren’t just looking for your run-of-the-mill two-bedroom apartment. Some are seeking experiences that are truly off the beaten path, as shown by its booking data:
