By The Hollywood Reporter

'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn's recent firing over old tweets and a Paramount TV exec’s dismissal amid racially charged comments only reinforce an "atmosphere of fear" and fail to aRead full story

I don’t disagree with the article, but do think that the pendulum has to be swung to the opposite side as part of the journey before we eventually achieve equilibrium. It is a good thing that corporate and Hollywood are finally taking actions. Without a clear line that no one should cross, it would be too easy to go back to individual implicit biases we have and punish only those who are less like “us”.

“We need to have a rubric to judge social infractions. What exactly was said or done? In what context? What was the intention? Who was offended or hurt? How badly? How long ago did it happen? Is this

“We need to have a rubric to judge social infractions. What exactly was said or done? In what context? What was the intention? Who was offended or hurt? How badly? How long ago did it happen? Is this a first offense? I, too, want to eliminate offensive speech and actions as quickly as possible. I still believe justice delayed is justice denied. But we need to judge the totality of the person, not just a stray utterance. How many of us would survive under that strict litmus test?”

James Gunn's circumstances for dismissal were quite disturbing: a politically motivated outside actor surfaced Tweets from his history to Disney management. Are we not free from our digital past? Do we not have an opportunity to distance ourselves from the people we once were or clarify the context with which we wrote? Can the employer dismiss us lawfully if these communications are not demonstrating a continuing pattern? Consider Weinstein or Roman Polanski. How did we get here to James Gunn? The pendulum has swung too far

  • Temporary stupidity is something each one of us experiences. The fact that nobody knows or cares who I am or what I say is invaluable.

  • There are two problems in these types of situations. Number 1 is the type of communication. You can say anything that is inoffensive to 20 people and 2 of those people would somehow find it offensive based on how THEY understood it. Now a days it is very difficult to please everyone and not offend anyone

There are two problems in these types of situations. Number 1 is the type of communication. You can say anything that is inoffensive to 20 people and 2 of those people would somehow find it offensive based on how THEY understood it. Now a days it is very difficult to please everyone and not offend anyone; especially when you’re shown across the world on social media-regardless of intentions-you are bound to offend someone. Number 2. Is that EVERYONE is so powerless that they have to blame someone for everything. Find fault in everything. Complain about non sense. Get offended way too easily because they have soft skin. These generations are being babied making them feel attacked when someone else does not agree or bound down to them or do as they please. They don’t know how to ignore little problems or have a sense of humor. There are times where things are offensive, example trump blowing things out of proportion, don’t get me wrong , but half the time there is no need to be offended by somethings because in reality - in a few months- it will be completely forgotten about regardless and that person will be living with the shame for the rest of their lives.

As for these stompers that don’t know how to walk quietly- why should we continue to praise them as if they ARE ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTING to our society in a positive way? They make an absurd amount of money for maybe some reason- but insane amount they don’t even have the life time to spend all of it! We should reduce their income and share it with those actually trying to make a difference and impact the world in a positive way.

  • The list of whites being fired over something they may have said is growing everyday. Being a person of color and making the same comment will give you a promotion. White genocide.
