  • This is how it’s done.

“It doesn’t have to be an anomaly. It can be everywhere. It can be in every industry. All we have to do is ask why it’s not, and then start to create it ourselves and start to make it happen.”

  • Ava DuVernay is pure inspiration. Ava DuVernay is pure inspiration. She started making films after pivoting in her career, gained attention and critical acclaim for “Selma,” and was a catalyst for the “#oscarssowhite” movement after being snubbed by the Academy awards. She earned a development deal with Netflix which led to the creation of one of the most important films about race in America, “13th.” Next, she teamed up with Oprah and OWN for “Queen Sugar” and made sure she sent a ladder back down to provide opportunities for women and people of color in the industry. • Many gems in this piece but one I love: “She celebrated by having a dance party with her niece.” How people celebrate says a lot about their understanding of how they fit into the world. Give your average white guy a good job and he just accepts it as a matter of course; he deserves it in his own mind

Give your average white guy a good job and he just accepts it as a matter of course; he deserves it in his own mind. But for so many people, an opportunity to shine is an unexpected blessing.

Keep people dancing. Find ways to create a chance for those who don’t normally get them. Because there is magic in all that talent you just never seem to see.
