  • Something is suspect when the University of Wisconsin at Madison is ranked 43 in the world, but only 66 in the United States. West Point is 58 in the United States, and not ranked internationally. The conclusions are inconsistent and suspicious.

  • University rankings depend heavily on how you measure and weight various factors: teaching, research, cost, etc. A good reason to be skeptical of these rankings is how often universities change ranks. That usually reflects manipulation of the ranking criteria, not actual changes at the universities

University rankings depend heavily on how you measure and weight various factors: teaching, research, cost, etc. A good reason to be skeptical of these rankings is how often universities change ranks. That usually reflects manipulation of the ranking criteria, not actual changes at the universities. Unfortunately, publishing a similar ranking every year is not a good way to sell magazines.

  • I guess that's what you get when your top priority becomes safe spaces

  • The US university has stifled thought & dissent with their interpretation of safe spaces. Originally a safe classroom was one where all ideas were welcome no matter how exotic. The idea today is that no one can be offended. If you fear offending someone you hunker down, spout what you are told & get

The US university has stifled thought & dissent with their interpretation of safe spaces. Originally a safe classroom was one where all ideas were welcome no matter how exotic. The idea today is that no one can be offended. If you fear offending someone you hunker down, spout what you are told & get your grade. Don't challenge, don't even ask for elaboration too often. You cannot stifle critical thought in one area without it bleeding into other areas.

Also, our current political correctness will be very uncomfortable for many foreign students. Navigating a foreign university is difficult enough without trying to avoid our changing definitions of sexism, racism, etc.

  • Our selective sense of rationalization is costing us. We can be great again even if only in our own minds. Here is what the third party suggested: “To keep up, he said the U.S. needs to stay open-minded and focused on higher education, and increase public funding.”

  • Not used to seeing a list with Harvard so far down. Brexit doesn't seem to be affecting university rankings one bit.

  • Everybody has their lists but bottom line is if you are on the list you are in good company. Impressive to see the rise of Asian universities in particular.

  • I have decided to believe only the rankings where we rank high.

  • #25 in the world? Go Cats!

  • Take a step backward and consider how bad our colleges really are when numerous gifts are bestowed on the judges and we still don't make the top 2.
