Brexit deal reached

The EU and the UK agreed on a Brexit deal, but there are many hurdles ahead. Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party said it’s still not backing the deal, BBC reports. Their support is essential if Johnson wants to pass it through parliament on Saturday.

Brexit deal reaction as PM heads to EU summit - BBC News

We now have a hastily-agreed, last-minute deal, an agreement that would ensure a reasonably orderly British departure from the EU. But despite Boris Johnson’s fanfare, the devil’s in the detail. We now have a hastily-agreed, last-minute deal, an agreement that would ensure a reasonably orderly British departure from the EU. But despite Boris Johnson’s fanfare, the devil’s in the detail. The Tory party’s own partner in this strange minority government, Northern Ireland’s DUP, won’t back this deal, making it unlikely it’ll get through Parliament.

The pound surged on Brexit deal news. It was a rollercoaster day for the sterling: It sank after the Democratic Unionist Party said it didn’t support the deal. It surged to $1.29 against the dollar after the EU and the UK announced a deal had been reached. It’s a five-month high.

The pound is rallying on a highly uncertain Brexit deal

The Brexit news is rippling through global markets, but the pound’s gain is fading and much remains uncertain. A key question is how much prime minister Boris Johnson can promise members of parlaiment to get his deal over the line. Devolved powers to Scotland and Northern Ireland, perhaps? And would that be enough?

The future of work

Is there age bias in your workplace? The “global lead of cross-generational intelligence” at software analytics company SAP spoke with Quartz on identifying and addressing ageism.

Is there age bias in your workplace? These simple exercises will tell you

I like the idea of someone tasked with “cross-generational intelligence”. Gender parity and good representation of ethnic minorities and LGBTQ at work are still important. Yet as we live longer, being inclusive on colleagues who are “older” is equally critical.

The world in 50 years

What will we eat? “A lot more plants,” says scientist and author Bill Nye. Check out the predictions from artist and activist Mai Khôi, Andreessen Horowitz general partner Vijay Pande, transhumanist Zoltan Istvan, and more thought leaders.

The World in 50 Years: What will we eat?

First, what a great project Quartz has put together here. Second, eating will be determined by how fast the microprocessor evolves. If we become full cyborgs dependent on solar, etc, we could very quickly as a species lose our need for biological food altogether. That’s what the Singularity is sbout

Surprising discovery

Marking 30 years of the web

The mysterious sounds that defined the early days of the internet. Before we were always online, logging on to the internet was a journey through sound. Here’s what those sounds actually meant.

A series of mysterious bleeps and bloops defined the early days of the Internet

The dial up sound was the soundtrack to a very distinct period in my life, and I never thought about that until I saw a video of the reactions of kids who had never heard it. I found this piece deeply satisfying for a question I never knew I had.

My dad worked on satellites when I was a kid, so my house was an early adopter of many things—including dial-up. I’d constantly request my dad “make the computers talk”—I was obsessed with the sounds modems made! I didn’t realize till I read this article how spot-on my childhood simplification was.

People need to make sure they are educated on all the reasons a woman doesn’t tell or doesn’t come forward. And when one does get the courage to do so, others gain that courage as well because the shame goes away a little bit by knowing that it wasn’t just them. Sexual misconduct is rarely an isolated incident. The fact that many women are coming forward now shouldn’t be a big surprise.

  • In the next 72 hours we will learn whether the GOP truly believes sexual assault is a serious social issue. What they do in the next 72 hours will be their defining perspective on women in our society.

The Senate Judiciary received the declaration which was signed under penalty of perjury. The American public deserves the truth. There is no reason to rush to vote on Friday.

    I believe Anita Hill

    I believe Christine Blasey Ford

    I believe Debra Ramirez

    I believe Julie Swetnick

I believe ALL of Bill Cosby’s accusers

  • Now they all want to come out of the woodwork..this is ridiculous. It's a payday and a way to further the agenda of Dems and leftists. It is criminal and unethical.

  • There is no upside for these women to come into the public eye.

What they are doing is incredibly brave.

Somehow, lots of men don’t get this.

  • I hate it when people say things like, "The American public deserves the truth." It's such a political thing to say, as if we don't already know. It's grandstanding. Posturing. Virtue-signaling at its best.

It's unbelievable to me that grown adults can cast all reason and logic aside at the drop of

It's unbelievable to me that grown adults can cast all reason and logic aside at the drop of a hat, the second someone says something that they want to hear.

I believe women? No. I believe women who are telling the truth, and the truth is not always so easily defined.

This is yet another story in which there are no direct witnesses besides the woman telling the story. Do you know what that means? She could be LYING. I will not condemn Kavanagh until I've seen the evidence that condemns him. Innocent until PROVEN guilty was an American concept not too long ago.

  • Is this a Bill Cosby moment? Or a politically motivated sham? True-believers on either side will deepen their entrenched positions. What we really need is truth.

  • It’s unfortunate that the original complaint was held for nearly two months. This could have been over a long time ago.

This latest accuser alleges Kavanaugh actually did nothing illegal that she witnessed. She claims he was at a party where others raped her. She claims he stood in line - for something

This latest accuser alleges Kavanaugh actually did nothing illegal that she witnessed. She claims he was at a party where others raped her. She claims he stood in line - for something- at other parties. She does not directly accuse him of any form of sexual misconduct.

We may never know the truth. But to say there is no gain to these women for coming forward would be to ignore the strongest possibility. The left doesn’t need everyone to believe, they need to switch one or two votes. They don’t want proof, they want doubt.

If the truth were an objective the original accusation would have been properly investigated two months ago. But if it turned up nothing it may not have switched one or two votes.

Sexual misconduct and rape should always be taken seriously. But that means equally across the aisle. Juanita Broderick had a very credible claim and continues to be ignored. There’s a real problem. It won’t be solved using accusations for political gain - whether the accusations end up being true or false. Making these women political pawns is not justice. Nor is pointing at those on one side of the aisle while wearing blinders where you are. That’s worse than no justice.

  • I believe that no matter who our President picked, or picks next to serve on the Supreme Court, there will suddenly appear a list of Democrats ready to swear that person sexually assaulted them.

  • There is definitely an opportunistic theme here but a supreme Court judge should be uphold to above average ethics. Most of the accusations have been validated by journalist sources. You can argue if you personally think it's an assault or something else but something did happen and it's amoral to sworn

  • Based on how quickly they want to hold the vote, there’s a good chance that they knew about these allegations but decided to “plow through” anyway.

Also, this woman is putting her career at risk by coming forward. She has a security clearance and signed an affidavit. Lying risks perjury and even losing

Also, this woman is putting her career at risk by coming forward. She has a security clearance and signed an affidavit. Lying risks perjury and even losing her career. Hard to imagine that she’s just making this up.

  • If the democrats get away with this fairy tale then all men everywhere should stop associating with all women and purchase a sex doll making sure the dolls memory tapes are erased every morning

  • We all need to remember that this is all motivated by politics. Dirty politics at its worse. We can not let dirty politicians circumvent our morals, ethics and due process.

  • It is so easy to write off allegations.

It is so easy to charge them as politically or even financially motivated.

it is so easy to laugh off horrific actions one may have done in the past.

It is so hard as a victim to erase the actions from their memory.

it is so hard as a victim to ever consider forgiving

It is so hard to come forward and receive death threats and pushbacks from the unknown.

It is so hard to be brave after going through so much physical and mental trauma.

Why is it is so hard to ask people to do better and be better humans?

This goes beyond politics. It goes towards ethics, human decency, and what is truly right and equal.

  • To quote Chico Marx from the film Duck Soup “who ya gonna believe, me or your own eyes?”

  • It is amazing, how many people, more than a few Attorneys so willfully ignore due process!

  • Fair to say that Trump would have been wiser to appoint a woman. Only three are serving now; Sotomayor and Kagan were appointed by Obama and Ginsburg by Clinton.

Maybe there is a silver lining here and this is part two of the ‘me too’ movement? Meaning this is the time when women actually get appointed

  • I really like NewsPicks: these comments are all over the political spectrum. No bubbles here!

  • All this country needs is the truth, but the Dems are so caught up in their hate their lies they will do anything. Kav was guilty the moment the first word was spoken come on America this is not the way we work here. If he’s guilty prove he’s guilty don’t just accept that he is.

  • It is notable that some of the highest-rated comments are from those who think that these accusations are all false and part of a "leftist agenda".

These three are not random women picked from a pool of available "crisis actors", if that were a thing. Each of these women knew Justice Kavanaugh and went to school with him around the same time. They have a similar social network, so coming forward to tell corroborating stories carries severe potential repercussions for each of them, as their social circles would obliterate them for fabricating these stories.

Also, as they are contemporaries telling similar stories, their stories carry similar weight as the four Gospels, which were also written by contemporaries of Jesus and told similar stories, decades later. Does that analogy make sense to you?

Listen to these women. The next women to be sexually assaulted by a rich, highly privileged man could be someone you love.

  • Why is sexual misconduct such a big problem in today’s society?

I do strongly believe that sexual horseplay is a private matter, and should not be misconstrued. Your job and your private life should not be practiced inside the workplace. Inside the workplace things are different than on the streets

Inside the workplace things are different than on the streets. It’s very easy to get away with whispering something, or even touching a little.

  • The sad thing about this is the truthful accusers of the world with witnesses (with names), names of people @ the event, addresses, physical evidence, friends who showed support @ the time of the assault and who told parents, teachers, other friends, etc about this type of behavior have been put under

Militarizing proofless accusations at the 11th hour, 59th minute of this process brought forth by political enemies of President Trump makes this process a joke and sets new low standards that democrats will eventually be forced to face themselves in events to come!

Be convicted all you sinners who are accused! To hell with evidence, to hell with due process, to hell with the concept of innocent until PROVEN guilty. No, this isn’t a court of law. This IS, however, the standard of a civilization that we use to determine how we treat each other socially, at work, or in relationships. Mob rule is VERY dangerous and can be used against all parties - remember the McCarthy years about everyone in Hollywood being a communist?

Ask the lacrosses players of Duke University how they existed during the months of condemnation by women activists and the press until the truth came out.

BTW - where were all the parents of these kids 35+ years ago? I was a parent of a teenager during that time and there is no way my daughter would be going to parties every weekend whether in high school or college without her mother & I knowing who she was going out with, where she was going, when she would be back, WHO was @ the party, & what adult supervision was present to keep order. And if we didn’t know any of this information, she didn’t go! And we always found out what happened @ these parties - one way or another - including drinking or drugs!

Finally, teenagers talk - about everything! Just look @ social media platforms. Whatever happens - good or bad - is going to find its way into SOMEBODY’S conversation to someone and secrets get out. Somehow, we’re expected to believe these 3 women had these issues happen to them by Mr. Kavanaugh and / or his friends and NO ONE said anything to anybody?!?! Until right now just b/4 his SCOTUS vote?

No - this is Democrat power politics using character assassination to destroy the 5th potential vote on SCOTUS to save liberal ideology. This has been stated by leftist activists as their intention. And bringing more anonymous character assassins out to pile on, to try and establish credibility, all coached by leftist, activist lawyers is the nail in the coffin to me for incredulity!

  • This is a train wreck waiting for more trains to pile on. Can we all just wait and see what happens tomorrow. I have thoughts, but for now these are allegations and Judge Kavanaugh is innocent until proven guilty, although this is not a court of law. It does seem that the tar and feathers are at the ready. A damned shame.

  • How many women does it take for the legislature to check this presidential pick?!! He is clearly unqualified at this point Merick Garland had a sterling record and was delayed for over a year this one they can’t even delay for a day.

  • Could DT have picked a more divisive more controversial nominee? No. For Kav To put his family through this is a testament to His unbridled ambition. How about putting the good of the country and your family ahead of your personal ambition ?

  • If true, it is disqualifying. But, that’s a big If at this point.

It’s hard to believe six FBI investigations didn’t turn up this sort of activity. Or that the 65 plus women who signed letters of support were not aware of it either.

I heard first hand of a train happening in another fraternity, and

I heard first hand of a train happening in another fraternity, and even at 19 I was disgusted. I can’t imagine 65 women giving it a pass.

On the other hand, the letter is pretty explicit, and easily refuted by others at Yale, if not true. Spit would be extremely risky for her to sigh it, if in fact she is subject to perjury from doing so. I am not so sure she is.

I think it’s bogus, but what do I know. We will see.

If true he will withdraw, if not he won’t.

  • If the allegations are true , he should be punished. If they are not the slanderers should get the punishment.

  • No...it will be the deciding factor whether or not we can discern lies when they are staring us in face.

Clearly, intelligent people would cancel tomorrow’s hearing, request a full investigation and subpoena witnesses on all sides to swear under oath. Apparently intelligence and common sense are not in play here.

Methinks HE doth protest too much and is now frantic, even if he doesn’t get confirmed his current judgeship is now in question. Everyone who touches trump gets burnt.

  • Too many women have made allegations against him he should not be on the supreme Court

  • No woman has ever made a false rape accusation. We must believe these women.

  • They should have done this 8 weeks ago rather than sit on it that’s the problem Diane F of Cali is an idiot or keen as a fox

  • Why is everyone attacking a good candidate?

  • Does anyone else see the resemblance to the Salem witch trials? The Democrats have sunk to a new low showing that they are truly the bottom feeders of American society. Their “stop Kavanaugh’’ campaign has no evidence, no witness- Dr. Ford is refusing to turn over her lie detector test however is willing to destroy a good man’s life and career simply because they are part of the “resistance“ and will stop at nothing to get what they want. High school friends of the judge reported being harassed by yellow journalism reporters working for places such as Huffington post about his character during the summer this is been planned and now it’s being executed. Sad…

  • "While Republican staff posed questions to Kavanaugh, their Democratic counterparts were also on the call but did not ask any questions."

Kavanaugh is endorsed by Republican but why Democratic stuff also hesitated to inquire?

    Transparency must come in.
