And can MTA pls redo the courtesy campaign. MAN SPREAD is on the rise based on my recent subway experiences. That campaign was an outstanding reminder of mass transit protocol and manners.

  • This headline is misleading as 93% of women in the survey have a college degree and live in NYC. Presumably they can afford to take a cab alone.

    That fact that they mostly have BAs and are, likely, higher earners is buried in the story — but probably doesn’t have the same blunt impact as this headline

    In other words, not all women have the luxury to take cabs and car services. What about those who can’t afford it? I’d like to read an article about that.

  • I take a lot of Uber’s and Taxis in NYC. The last time I was their a food cart salesman followed me down the street. I have no idea what he wanted and didn’t want to find out.

    You know it’s a problem when you’re finding New Yorkers and pretending to walk with them.

  • To any woman living in a big city, this is obvious. Yet I have never stopped to consider the consequences.

    Perhaps this is the problem - our tendency to lean out of suboptimal situations without speaking up. This is why the wage gap is so persistent.

    When I was interning on Wall Street, I did convince Goldman Sachs to reimburse me for taxi transportation because I didn’t feel safe commuting on the subway at 5am. They had never heard anyone ask for that before.

    Perhaps more of us should be bringing this up with employers instead of just settling with the idea our lives have to be more difficult or complicated because we are women. They don’t know unless we tell them.

  • This isn’t something I’d thought about but makes perfect sense. Not only don’t I always feel safe on trains at night by myself but the walk to and from stations poses it’s own concerns. I’d love to see his taken into account and have better options available but this city can barely keep normal transpiration running.

  • I'd be curious to see how this trends multiplies as you extend to the outer boroughs and neighborhoods where Subway and bus stops are even further away from neighborhoods.

    Add to that the number of lower paying jobs that often require unusual hours, and I believe that women with less income are even more disadvantaged.

  • It is unfortunate that, through no fault of their own, the less empowered demographics are not represented to the level of their population proportion. The same concerns but much different options.

  • Excellent article about the daily challenges of being a woman. I never had problems in using mass transit but I have never traveled late or very early & always with either my husband or a small group.

  • Even if the mode of transportation was equal (between men and women), I believe women (in general) tip more generously than men do. I won’t comment on whether that is a good thing or not. I think women are more open to spending ‘extra’ money perhaps because they value different things than men do (ie

I think women are more open to spending ‘extra’ money perhaps because they value different things than men do (ie. Safe feeling, so they tip drivers they feel comfortable with more)... I’ve never seen a study on this... it’s just a related idea and I believe it’s a strong hypothesis, IMO.
