The discovery problem is a big one and using AI is essential for a platform like Pinterest, who are on the receiving end of millions of searches each month. Effective search is paramount and a content-based business cannot survive nowadays unless it is delivering fresh and relevant content to the right audience at the right time – before the introduction of AI, this was a tricky equation to solve.

In the media and publishing world we’re even more time poor. In today’s digital world, publishers are under constant pressure to tell the latest story and compete for consumer attention. At the same time, compelling imagery is inextricably linked to online engagement. We introduced an AI-powered tool in August called Panels, which aims to address both of these challenges. Essentially the tool acts as a picture editor, and is able to recommend the best visual content to accompany a news article, using customisable filters and a self-improving algorithm that optimises over time. For our customers using Panels, this has transformed their search experience on our platforms and with over 200 million pieces of content, there’s plenty more time in the day for those online Christmas shopping orders, or if you’re like myself – that after work G&T.

  • I feel like Pinterest is an underrated experience and people don’t openly admit how much they secretly love it. I fell into the Pinterest hole like many others, when I started planning my wedding. Now I find it super useful for creative inspiration from home design to cooking. The AI-powered recommendations

The AI-powered recommendations are hyper-relevant and keep me spending more time on the platform.

  • Under the radar, Pinterest has quietly become a Goliath, now valued at $13-$15B. Simple and focused, the true potential of the platform is just now being understood: an elegant and engaging path to purchase where brands are welcome, and not a disruption.

  • Where Pinterest is successful is Applied Artificial Intelligence, by efficiently categorizing images and offering them as recommendations to users. Pinterest has a world class team, and their computer vision improves everyday.

  • I don’t know about the rest of its AI, but Pinterest’s mid-century modern furniture algorithm is top-notch.

  • I’ve personally found Pinterest’s suggestions to be a bit hit or miss in the past. After I saved a recipe for a cucumber salad, Pinterest suggested 9 more (nearly identical) cucumber salad recipes. However, it does seem to be getting better, and I’m definitely one of those secret Pinterest lovers.

Perhaps by no longer calling itself a social media platform — a smart move in terms of how people actually use the platform — Pinterest has made itself more utilitarian and less something people get passionate about. Are there Pinterest “influencers”? What might that look like?

Still, as others have noted, solid user engagement and growth, plus an impressive valuation, might be worth more than splashy headlines and a gushing fan base.

  • Search functionality seemed like such a simple and straightforward thing for so long. Using AI Pinterest has taken that functionality to a new universe. Without AI it would be impossible to customize a user’s complex experience and make the search function intuitive and proactive.
