The logistics and reasoning behind the border wall are what confuse me more than anything. Most of the drugs that come in to the country come in trucks that aren’t caught at the border and a large number of undocumented immigrants come from overseas via other modes of transportation. A wall wouldn’t really put a dent in either of those problems (inflow of drugs, inflow of undocumented immigrants). While funding for better border security may be required I don’t think a wall would do anything of significance. Trump has convinced his base of the contrary and the White House is feeling the pain.

Democracy depends on active engagement of the citizenry in civic affairs. Unfortunately, for sixty years politicians and corporations trained the population to be passive consumers. We were trained to believe that we could always have our way. Compromise was unnecessary for most, and then a threat to many.

Now we see the consequences. The midterms provided a note of hope, as we saw levels of political engagement unseen for generations.

The problem with Trump is that he won’t take yes for an answer. He has not earned enough trust to justify compromising with him. From a negotiation perspective, the only logical approach is the one Pelosi has taken.

  • The blame-game underway in DC only reinforces the distrust Americans have built up toward politicians of both parties. The rest of us can’t afford to ignore or stall on critical tasks in our jobs: if we can’t meet the challenge, we get fired. Immediately.

We’re turning our country and it’s institutions into a joke. If I weren’t laughing, I’d be crying.

I admit that I give more credit to President Trump for trying to we engage and move things along. Though he appears to take a rigid position on the wall, I believe it is his negotiation tactics of set a hard position, but actuslly being willing to adjust from there. The professional politicians, on the other hand, are used to only posturing. They do not value accomplishment of the deal; only the optics of how the deal is transacted. Their personal value is in image, not in a genuine outcome.

So here is the image I see. A president, who already is not taking a salary, waiting in the Oval Office to talk, continually inviting people to come and talk. At the same time, you have Congress who is trying to travel to foreign destinations and refusing to talk, except to posture for their base and the media.

Finally, consider the largest impact is not the people who are going without paychecks for a few weeks. It is the Government Contracting, which now will hit change orders, delay penalties, and additional interest and fees. This is no way to run a government. The House of Representatives has one primary job -- to provide a budget. Continuing resolutions, making adjustments from the year before, are not budget. They are failure. They have failed for decades, so that we now accept it as normal. The way our current Congress functions is pathetic. All Americans deserve better.

    (Drop mic.)

Pelosi and the Dems are doing what they were called upon to do in the mid-terms -- stop Trump. Had the mid-terms gone in favor of the GOP (my party, by the way) we wouldn't be in this mess. Trump was all too proud to boast that this would be his shut down - because he never lacks confidence. And so, this is his shut down -- and it's up to McConnell and the Senate to end it by voting on the bill from Congress and override a presidential veto

We told the Dems they had to live with Trump's victory. Now it's our turn to accept their victory in Congress.

    End of story.

  • If you think Pelosi should cave to a racist bully holding the government hostage, your understanding of how democracy is supposed to work is, well, sad.

  • HA! Pelosi is the one in the weak position here. She has the ability to negotiate terms that will get her, and her party quite a lot, even with her radical left wing because of the Republican votes in the House. She's postured herself into a corner and can't seem to find her way bsck yo the middle. Her number 2 Steny Hoyer has already jumped ship. There are moderate Democrats in the House and Senate ready to deal. She and Schumer are truly insanity personified. God help us...everyone.

  • Nothing pelosi says or does is for the US citizen. She’s out to destroy us from the inside out

  • For as long as the base wants the wall, this is Trump’s only option. Losing the base means the odds of impeachment (and conviction in the Senate) go way up. If he wants to survive the term, he can’t give in on this (to be clear, I think the wall is abhorrent but that’s different from how the politics play out).

  • The Democrats should fight for some type of Amnesty program in exchange for Wall Funding. Security of anything in the physical world starts with physical methods, so the Wall is not that outrageous.

  • So, the Dems are working on an alternate plan, eh? Isn't it obvious to everyone that they are simply not willing to give Trump one of his campaign promises? A promise that contributed to him getting elected, I might add. The country elected Trump because of what he promised to do. In other words, the

A promise that contributed to him getting elected, I might add. The country elected Trump because of what he promised to do. In other words, the country's citizens want a wall and the Dems could care less what the American people want. They just want to destroy Trump and get back in power (for their own benefit). How can anyone back these kinds of power-hungry politicians?

A few thoughts on the border security debate. First and foremost, in my view pretty much all immigration is good although legal immigration is better. The fact that we face pressure from people wanting to get into our country is a very positive thing. Sure, a few dead beats and drug criminals might make their way here, but we have plenty of those homegrown and indigenous. Those striving for better lives should be encouraged, not discouraged. To shift the balance toward legal immigration we should tighten border security in the areas where illegal immigration is most prevalent. A 2,000 mile long cement or steel border wall is patently ridiculous. And has no one ever heard of tunnels!? The wall would be dumb, expensive and morally abhorrent, but modern surveillance techniques should be put in place to alert border patrol agents to illegal border crossings so that they can be prevented as much as possible. At the same time, we should simplify the process of getting in legally so that when people arrive at the border there is a way for them to cross lawfully. We have done this before. The boat flotillas from Cuba resulted in dynamic growth in South Florida. Allowing Russian Jews and others escaping communism the opportunity to resettle here gave rise to vibrant advancement all across America. Unfortunately, making it difficult to arrive from Central America results in an illegal immigrant subculture composed of people who live in fear of deportation and who therefore become less able to contribute to the growth of American society. Every new person legally arriving here is an engine of growth. They make money, they start businesses, they buy houses, they fix up dilapidated neighborhoods. With our national birth rate at all time low levels, this is the way that our stability and strength can be maintained and enhanced. We are, and should always remain, the pot that melts and blends the best.

  • TLet’s all remember this a similar deal offered last year Trump walked away from it. So why should democrats take the bait now. Remember GO Trump can’t switch responsibility t9 the democrats since himself since he ordered the shut down. His compromise is no compromise.

  • I'm sorry John Harris but Nancy Pelosi is not the person to turn to to reopen the government. You-know-who's obstinate refusal to give an inch in the face of a number of compromises is exactly whh we are in this situation.

His total lack of empathy, coupled with the delusion that he can run the government

His total lack of empathy, coupled with the delusion that he can run the government the way he ran his companies (into the ground), illustrate the source of this mess and who needs to give an inch.

Don't blame this on people who aren't at fault. It's like blaming the robots because the humans killed the planet.

  • Then let’s just continue on with Americans out of work and not negotiate .. idiot

Trump enablers need to stop defending a Russian Asset destroying our Constitution

  • No Wall.

  • This man literally pulls “facts”, aka lies, out thin air and for some reason people buy into it. He sure does know how to represent those Americans who only read news headlines and treat fact-checking and due diligence like it doesn’t matter. In the words of the child himself, “Sad!”

  • To all those claiming that the left or the right will ultimately assume the blame for the shutdown...I hate to break it to you but everyone loses reputation points in a shutdown, both the left and the right.

  • Pelosi seems intent on destroying her own party. Her rejection of The New Trump Plan on Dreamers is a signal to many that this is a ‘personal’ vendetta of her own pure hatred of Trump as a person. She has completely stopped listening. Her rejection of The New Trump Plan on Dreamers is a signal to many that this is a ‘personal’ vendetta of her own pure hatred of Trump as a person. She has completely stopped listening. Trump’s offer is a tremendously positive move. I saw the video of the migrants on her property, whom she did not want and made leave. Since she does not want migrants, then her only motive for not compromising is about a personal win. And that, my friends, shows just how selfish she is. I do not believe she really cares about The People or our country. It is too bad she is The Speaker.

  • Trump doesn’t care a lick about logistics or things that make actual sense. What he’s most randy about is the wet dream inducing idea (for him not me) that he’d have a big, hard, beautiful barrier with his name on it, literally. It’s akin to having those fake testicles hanging from the trailer hitch of a pick up truck.

  • For me, this is quite uncomplicated. With my own eyes I watched Trump exacerbate DACA and TPS issues into crisis. It quite literally happened in front of those of us who chose to look at it. He then creates a border crisis and offers Democrats a way out of his border fiasco by asking them to fix his DACA and TPS fiasco.

  • Yes,build the wall to protect American sovereignty and the rule of law. Democrats are so recalcitrant and just want to oppose the President at every turn.

  • I cannot quite understand why Trump has been so obsessed with building a physical wall that he has resorted to shutdown the government, significantly endangering the entire “security” of the US; without a properly functioning cyber security team, the public sector of the US is extremely vulnerable to

I cannot quite understand why Trump has been so obsessed with building a physical wall that he has resorted to shutdown the government, significantly endangering the entire “security” of the US; without a properly functioning cyber security team, the public sector of the US is extremely vulnerable to hacking now!!!

Is this all about maintaining the public image of being “a man of his word” for voters???

  • You're either not listening or are truly just a brainwashed mindless numbskull Nancy Pelosi is the worst kind of partisan politician.Trump is fixing this country for the far better and you can't stand that!

  • A wall of hate is not America.

  • There’s something for everyone in the plan, and probably more room for negotiation. I hope Nancy Pelosi steps up.

  • President Trump is flexible enough to show Sincerety what I didn't see among Democrats.

  • Let him build his stupid wall and let the next president tear it down. Lord knows we're well accustomed to such behavior. The way this country is going these days it sounds like a bunch of children arguing in playground

  • Trumps claims don't bare out with real stats. So it's stories from Trumps Crypt. He is a horror story.

  • Trump may be waiting to engage in his White House office in order to come up with a compromise but if the “compromise “ isn’t exactly what he wants, he walks out of the room. I don’t believe that he has ever learned the art of negotiation! To him, it does not matter that a large majority of Americans

Trump may be waiting to engage in his White House office in order to come up with a compromise but if the “compromise “ isn’t exactly what he wants, he walks out of the room. I don’t believe that he has ever learned the art of negotiation! To him, it does not matter that a large majority of Americans do not want this wall for many reasons, from its appearance to the fact that real structural engineers have not been consulted. Many of THOSE have stated that the current designs are accidents waiting to happen. This includes a woman (I wish I could remember her name) who is a Forensic Structural Engineer. She knows about giant things that fall or are relatively easy to break through. And this doesn’t even address the billions it will actually take to build and maintain, and the decades it will take to cover 2,000 miles, and the lawsuits to be gotten through over taking over people’s land. The whole idea is nonsense, politically motivated to make his base happy. So if border security is REALLY what Trump wants to see, then open up our government again, gather together and come up with a real compromise that has nothing to do with getting re elected. Fix the immigration system.

  • Trump had a GOP Congress & Senate for 2 years. Yet, he couldn't get funding for a wall. Now after 2 years, the House went Democrat. And Trumper's want to argue that it's the Democrats fault for the Shutdown? The Shutdown started when "both" Senate & House was run by the GOP. How can you argue that this

  • I am surprise the government shutdown has lasted this long. I am hoping a resolution happens quickly, since the government has already been shutdown for weeks now. I am hoping for an agreement to be made one day this week.

  • The more I see of this ridiculous situation, the more I’m convinced it’s all a distraction. They have taken a page out of the Roman playbook.

Keep the mob distracted. Nothing else matters to maintain their power.

  • I am so sick of political parties obstructing rather than working together for the people that hired them, the American People. Border security is vital to all American interests and should be a priority instead of this petty political squabble......

  • No wall!!

  • I do not live in the US and Mexico.

But I can’t help but sympathize and can only imagine how the government workers and immigrant from Mexico feel to this incident.

  • Makunda Murali, your comments are interesting. And I'm curious how far you live from our southern borders.

I live 176 miles from the border where close to 400 illegal immigrants were just arrested. They had dug under a steel barrier designed to stop vehicles - no concrete footings to stop digging.

I live 176 miles from the border where close to 400 illegal immigrants were just arrested. They had dug under a steel barrier designed to stop vehicles - no concrete footings to stop digging.

AP published that Yuma's sector arrested 7,857 illegals in October & November.

I live 155 miles from Yuma.

The Customs and Border Patrol website is interesting to follow: https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/media-releases/all

I've mentioned in comments before - over 7 million AZ citizens are dependent upon a secure border.

Although it has been promised by all political affiliations for several decades, we still do not have a secure border.

If someone lives further away, the discussion becomes an academic, philosophical discussion - a luxury indeed.

For those who live closer, it's a crisis. And it's time to stop kicking the can down the road.

  • Please compromise and keep talking.

  • How about instead of a wall. We build Towers every 50 miles with the latest technologies and manned. Over a 2000 mile border we would only need 40 of them. Or even every 100 miles. What if Mrs. Pelosi gives the President wants and Mr. President let the caravan in and everyone will be happy. Everywhere we go there will be good and bad people. Americans are so lucky they don’t have to live like the way those poor people live. Take care of those people and God will take care of you. Be more sensitive to others. No man is an island. USA should be diverse.

  • Congress needs to work this out. Come up with a compromise that everybody can live with. Put a bill through both houses and send it to the Pres. If he vetoes it then override him. Stop playing politics and do your job.

  • Yes. A permanent solution for DACA and reopening the government for $5 billion is a good trade.

  • End the shutdown.

  • The wall is a symbolic power play at this point. On both sides. To stop this nonsense, the will to stop the suffering must be greater than the will to win the game. It would be easier if Trump could be trusted to stand behind his commitments. One day he “owns the shutdown” and the next he’s blaming others

  • Do not negotiate with terrorists!

  • And the Dems still say no SMH.
