There is still a lot that is not known about the Covington Catholic High School Boys incident this weekend. And they may in fact turn out to be the disrespectful, hateful little misogynists they were depicted as. But what we do know is that situations are often far more complex than an abstracted snippet of viral video can express. I for one am making it a policy now not to react to unverified, incomplete viral films until I know all the facts. It will probably mean that I won’t be one of the early ones to weigh in. But I would rather late than be part of the ignorant lynching mob that the keyboard warriors of social media try to enlist us as. Yes, they were wearing MAGA hats.Yes they were marching in support of anti-abortion. I abhor both of those things. But I am grateful to live in a country where they are allowed to be freely expressed. And twisting a snippet of film to make us hate these kids for their point of view is not what we should be doing. And not what our country is all about. #ClickWithCompassion.

As long as videos remain the main source to communicate any phenomenon, I think what’s going to be more important is to have multiple sources and vantage points that explain the phenomenon. We need to take as many data points as possible to make a reliable decision.

The media is very quick to attempt to create racial incidents. We have enough real problems without fabrication. But fake problems drive traffic just like real ones. And there’s no consequences. The NYT and CNN can indicate that the “new” video shows things in a different light. But the original video never showed what they reported. It was fake news to begin with and they got caught. It wasn’t a “bad camera angle”. It was made up bullsh*t.

  • Stop broadcasting viral videos calling it “news”...this goes for you FOX, CNN, ABC, CBS, & NBC. The dumbing down and polarization of Americans has been a direct result of the obsession with posting these types of videos at the expense of a thoroughly reported story or far more important news stories.

  • The article gets interesting here:

“But rather than drawing conclusions about who was vicious or righteous—or lamenting the political miasma that makes the question unanswerable—it might be better to stop and look at how film footage constructs rather than reflects the truths of a debate like this one

These sort of narratives are often complex, and not nearly as linear as we may like to believe.

  • This is probably the smartest take you’ll read about the entire incident. It’s really gets into just why video as a medium is so powerful.

  • It’s clear to me now that everyone involved was just trying to recreate Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing.

  • Though it's unfair to draw any conclusions as to who was right and who was wrong based on the footage, I will say that most of the students at Cov Cath are entitled, disrespectful children. This is excacerbated by the mob mentality of attending school with cookie cutter, rich, catholic kids. At the end

This is excacerbated by the mob mentality of attending school with cookie cutter, rich, catholic kids. At the end of the day, I couldn't care less about these kids getting a little slap in the face from the real world. And no, I'm not still butthurt about losing to Cov Cath my senior year of high school football.

  • They shouldn’t have been wearing MAGA hats to this event. That’s like wearing swastikas into a synagogue,..... then expecting everyone to be nice to them!!! They infuriated the local marchers and deserved to be called out on such insensitive behavior!! 🙄

  • One of the topics I’ve heard discussed here at Davos this week is the danger of deep video fakes to galvanize mobs. Imagine when an event like this is manufactured to be something even more egregious and is indistinguishable from an authentic video.

We are all going to need to learn to check facts and context before overreacting

  • I guess one of the toughest parts is that an image can be true without being factually accurate. That perhaps some, not all, of the critiques are lambasting the individuals involved here from an honest place. Tough in today’s culture but refraining until more information is out usually helps create a higher-level of dialogue.

  • At the end of the day whoever was there will know what truly happened. From the video shown it makes me sick to see such a young kid disrespect someone who was expressing there culture to the world and not only fought for the country this kid stands for! • Brad Jakeman, stop incentivising the ignorant by adding lies to your feedback. My son also wears his MAGA hat because he is proud of Trump and the Republican party. However, my son is a Christian and is the most respectful kid you would ever find. Folks such as yourself are crucifying my son and kids

Brad Jakeman, stop incentivising the ignorant by adding lies to your feedback. My son also wears his MAGA hat because he is proud of Trump and the Republican party. However, my son is a Christian and is the most respectful kid you would ever find. Folks such as yourself are crucifying my son and kids alike without you knowing them. You are also insulting parents such as myself who have worked had raisig the best kids who will be productive members of society.

STOP injecting fuel to this fire which has been created by the radical who want to destroy our county and values. You are playing a political game which is not helping our society but instead it is only helping you and whatever self serving objectives you at have.

I would be more than happy to debate you anytime and anywhere.

Do what is right and top this nonsense comments ...

  • Great article! It’s very surprising and saddening to me that so many people base their beliefs and narratives on snippets of a larger picture. Doesn’t anyone ever think, “hmm, I’d like to see the whole video before I pass judgement as if I’m 100% correct or even in a position to do so.”

  • What the author wanted to say could have been said in a tenth of the words used. Also, it is clear the author wants to sit on the fence and see which way the wind blows before falling off. All in all, the article is kind of corny for these reasons.

Just more misinformation to drive a political narrative, I no longer watch or trust MSM they get so many things wrong. I find myself reading a story and 5hen start fact checking every thing said, CNN, MSNBC, have a ton of nerve calling Trump a liar whenever they combine fact with fiction and add their own bias to it. These days everyone is separated into tribal groups, there are no more we are all Americans we should all work together or reach reasonable compromise. The video filmed by someone on a camera from their phone gave a much different narrative where the boys were there and the other group started using profanity and ultimately approach the boys and if you see someone wearing a magazine hat leave them alone, it’s their choice and their right. Don’t come out acting holy and innocent then lose it and bully a kid for wearing a magazine hat! If you hate this country so much you would desecrate the constitutional rights of fellow citizens you might consider going to live in a country that y9ur ideals fit in with! This isn’t Russia its America you have the right to wear whatever hat you want or support whatever candidate you choose!

  • To me he looked happy listening to the music, the drummer was doing his thing , no harm done. This is not a news event ffs

  • I appreciate the overall message of this article, but I don’t think that “smiling” should be referred to as behavior in need of excusing. Some people smile when stressed or uncomfortable. This child did not do or say anything to provoke Phillips to approach him and oddly play the drum while staring him

I appreciate the overall message of this article, but I don’t think that “smiling” should be referred to as behavior in need of excusing. Some people smile when stressed or uncomfortable. This child did not do or say anything to provoke Phillips to approach him and oddly play the drum while staring him down with unrelenting eye contact. If that happened to me I would be incredibly confused and nervous and wonder what that person was going to do next. The fact that all the kid did was smile is surprising to me. Why do you think he should take his hat off, a symbol of his beliefs, and show meekness and respect to a stranger for no apparent reason? What had Phillips done in these videos to warrant a special respectful gesture? He intimidated a child without cause in an attempt to provoke a reaction. I’d like to see you take off your hat and bow your head to every person who approaches you with unstated and unclear intentions, personally I hold onto my pepper spray a little tighter. There is no inexcusable behavior aside from that shown by the media and celebrities who have put the lives of children in danger based on a false narrative.

  • To quote individual one; I’m sure there are good people on both sides!

  • Agree 110% w/ Michael Allen's comment-- ending this problem starts with the news media finding its spine and not reporting on something just because it's "viral". Something's vitality can certainly be part of a story, but a story itself it is not.

  • This is peak idiocy, MSM is out for profit but the amount of carnage makes them appear as that their only desire is blood.

  • There was only one, but it was a bit of a surprise to see a Native American out mingling in the general population.

  • I was quick to make a terse judgment against the young man before listening to the whole story.

  • As a very young child in the 1950’s I saw N. Kruschev beat the podium with his shoe while shouting “We will bury you(the USA)”. As a very young child in the 1950’s I saw N. Kruschev beat the podium with his shoe while shouting “We will bury you(the USA)”. Soon after I heard a story that I doubt was intended nor expected to be seen as a depiction of a real event but rather an illustration of Russian propaganda! In this story the US and Russia were in an Olympic style athletic event. Russian newspapers reported Russia came in 2nd while the USA did so bad they were 2nd from last. The US papers reported that the US won Gold while Russia won Silver! The US and Russia were the only participants in the race! If it is not “ The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth” it is a lie! It may be called propaganda, fake news, BS, etc but it is simply a lie! Being “the press”, the “media”, the “news” is NOT an excuse for intentionally lying!!

  • This article captures the real point of many viral videos. Remember Wag the Dog? They are not persuasive rather they are propaganda.

This article, as well as Erin Holmes,

comments helped overcome my miasma. I watched the video 3 times and couldn't make any sense of it.

  • The problem is that certain MAGA supporting newspersonel stop looking for more info as soon as another possible version protects their MAGA friends/employers. If they would of done a little more digging they could of gotten other versions of video surrounding the incedent made by independent whites

You are not experts nor reporters, you are just lazy MAGA "reporters" with no more expertise than any one of us. Shame on you.

  • I would challenge everyone who commented right away on the first video to set aside their first reaction and read this article.

  • .... why aren't they in school, in Kentucky
