  • Hard pass on this idea. The State of the Union is the one time of year where all US politicians gather in a room and are forced to be reasonably civil towards one another. Like Thanksgiving, but with the cameras rolling.

  • Abolish sounds too official to me but I’m all in on the sentiment. State of The Union speeches are overwhelmingly boring and rarely make a ripple in history. The speech is 100 percent political , so is the response, the applause , the clothing of the audience and the guest list. Yes, get rid of the annual State of The Union Speech, send Congress a letter. It won’t happen but a girl can dream.

  • The President should address the Nation. Its imperative to know where he or she stands, is transparent and available to inform us of whats going on in the Nation.

We cannot only listen or count on the media for this information only. I would like to hear from our President on matters of importance. If we give this up we are farther away from knowing what's ahead for all of us.

We have taken enough things away from this Country. I believe in tradition this method is affirmative opens dialogue and keeps us connected as a Nation.

  • I just watched the speech.

I could see how you could hate it or how you could love it.

No matter what you think of President Trump, his message was clear, his agenda is clear.

    He is a consummate businessman.

  • Will the vitreol never end? Just because Jared Keller can't stand the sight of the POTUS, doesn't mean the State of the Union address should be discontinued. The address is as much (if not more) for the people of our country as it is for Congress. If we can listen to Obama and Clinton give these addresses

The address is as much (if not more) for the people of our country as it is for Congress. If we can listen to Obama and Clinton give these addresses for 16 years, we can hear Trump as well and all you snowflakes can just go over in the corner and hold your breath while plugging your ears 🤣🤣🤣

Democracy needs accurate journalism, not the sensationalism that prevails today.

It was also fun to watch Nancy eat her lips.

  • Its difficult to take anything seriously that consists of adults running a country acting like they're at a *Multi Level Marketing* pep rally. Standing ovations every 30 seconds and meaningless rhetoric that will be dismissed within 24 hours.

  • What a tired relic this presentation has become. Please, please put it back into written form and delivery by horse drawn carriage to the House. There's better uses for ones' time than this.

  • Personally, the state of the union speach is almost a tradition, if we can do away with tradition, then we lose what makes us and our touch with our past.

  • Agree, it’s a joke as are the rebuttals...Cartoon Network is a better view....love it when

the applause comes, one side of the aisle or the others stands up, but never the

    Judges...what a joke

  • president trump for we the people and will protect us

  • The most embarrassing part of the whole thing was the speaker behind the president doing a cross word or whatever. That was so naw naw naw na naw na, I'm not listening to you. All that was missing was the hands on the ears while she said those words.

Does ANYONE think anything can get done with that

  • While there are many reasons you can make this argument, the State of the Union is a tradition and, while it has taken different forms, is part of our history. While there are many reasons you can make this argument, the State of the Union is a tradition and, while it has taken different forms, is part of our history. It is a time to take stock of where we are- even if the nation is in a polarized state. As a parent, it presents an opportunity to watch something with your family that feels like an ‘event’ and have a discussion about how our country works. Who is each person. What are they doing (even if one of them does appear to be distracted.. - that is an opportunity to talk about optics!) . You can point to the different groups and explain how they fit in to the government structure, and why some deliberately behave the way they do- why don’t the generals applaud? Why are so many prominent women wearing white? Somehow random tweets just don’t have the same impact and getting a visual picture.

I'm actually a bit OldSkool and a Marine from the Beirut, Lebanon era. And as a SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) Operative, I can tell you that I have watched every SOTU from Ronald Regan to present times. I've used my experience and NSA background as a sniff test for excessive propaganda and to determine what may actually be red flag smoke screens for what's actually happening! Tonight's SOTU will be very interesting. I'm thinking it will be more of a cat fight than anything else between party lines.

  • Especially useless when Obama got up there and totally lied to the American people!

  • I would have to agree. What is the point? Especially in this administration.

  • I think the purpose is for the American people to hear directly from the President and not any news agencies or tabloids. It's not longer a he said, she said. Nice to hear about some of the things he has done that we have not heard about and refreshing in his respect for veterans and children with cancer

Nice to hear about some of the things he has done that we have not heard about and refreshing in his respect for veterans and children with cancer. I missed bits and pieces but thought it was a good speech. Better than a lot of them I have heard.

  • I wonder if we would have been asking this question if it were a different president? I suspect it isn’t SOTU we need to get rid of.

  • I didnt think it was boring at all.

  • Actually, the SOTU is a keeper. If nothing else, it provides important visual cues that help us assess the political climate as well as the character of individual politicians. Hard to imagine any other way to provide a window into emotion as well as information delivered at this event.

  • I hate what this nation has become.

  • I think it has value to lay out a vision and promote bipartisanship, but Trump has proven his ability to unite only lasts until he starts Tweeting during his next morning constitutional.

  • Regardless of the content of the speech, it absolutely provides a forum for the entire govt to come together at one time , in one place to face the executive branch and hear his/ her vision. It’s not supposed to be “ entertainment” as many here have suggested with their comments on how boring it was

Regardless of the content of the speech, it absolutely provides a forum for the entire govt to come together at one time , in one place to face the executive branch and hear his/ her vision. It’s not supposed to be “ entertainment” as many here have suggested with their comments on how boring it was. It is not a speech by the legislative branch , it is a constitutionally required address by the president to all of us regarding HIS adjenda and HIS views on the progress and state of the nation from HIS chair. It should remain and in my opinion, IS a relevant tool to gauge the presidents politics at the moment.

  • Excellent idea. Trump is incapable of understanding even what he is reading, at least he can still sound out the words that put in front of him. In this case he should simply be ignored. But this is an extreme case in a collapsing system.

None of these “state of. . . “ speeches are anything of importance anymore. It is empty ritual. We do not get information this way and the weakness of the old system shows. The pitiful example of Trump simply makes the pointlessness glaringly obvious.

  • Strikes me as nothing more than a pep-rally for the party in the White House. There’s a good reason why a number of the members of SCOTUS stay away now. I may not agree with them on many issues, however they’re right. It’s a sideshow for whomever is in power at the time. Factually deficient, little of substance.

  • I really don't want to listen to Trump any more than I have to but that isn't reason enough for me to do away with SOTU addresses.

I'm much more interested in abolishing the electoral college. Until we do that the "one person, one vote" concept is a lie and we're likely to continue to see presidents

  • I guess anything President Trump does well we should just abolish. Great plan, Democrats!

  • Judges never stand. They are politically neutral. Or supposed to be anyway

The State of the Union isn’t something that can just be abolished. It is a requirement of the Constitution that the President meet with Congress to provide information on the fiscal state of the federal government. The Union, now interpreted as the Union of States, is more truly intended to be an Executive Report on the Executive Branch. However, with ballooning government reach, a Congress that is no longer elected as intended by the framers, and a Legislative branch bent on obstruction rather than legislation (both parties at fault)- this is not only a waste of time, it is factually inaccurate no matter who the president is. The State of the Union is in danger due to out of control spending. Just my opinion

  • I don’t know what to think of this ? I feel at times that brilliant pundits ( Hi Jared ) on one hand send out a clarion call sayin son “ The times they are ah changin” and on the flip side their smarts and objectivity miss some basic sweet spot & they’re wrong, when I watch “State of the Union” addresses

I don’t know what to think of this ? I feel at times that brilliant pundits ( Hi Jared ) on one hand send out a clarion call sayin son “ The times they are ah changin” and on the flip side their smarts and objectivity miss some basic sweet spot & they’re wrong, when I watch “State of the Union” addresses ( sorry to tell you I’m a Canuck in Vancouver) but please allow me ( I love your country ) I notice from body language ( corny ? ) anyway I always sense that everything going on has obviously been studied intensely & pondered deeply as an individual is literally hoping to appeal to a conscience and just maybe “ influence” a mind in that room and thousands watching their TV’s he is transparent , his lies & truths will be more scrutinized than ever , on ABC they had an instant gauge of “ Truth, somewhat true,Spin & False I was shocked as only one item was deemed false and the “ needs more refinement “ was basically saying , hate to admit it “ mostly true” this guy has withstood so much hate and yet I look at your options from both dugouts and I think in spite of his obvious goofy narcissism & bad hair he’s a great leader, ( I dealt with about 6 of these guys in my 49 yr. career, their a type, and I don’t think he’s the evil one he’s made out to be or should I say media out to be. I would like the numbers of how many in the world watch that address and I’m telling you the world I strongly believe still looks to the US as a lighthouse, even if they hate to admit it , down deep we all think your great ! I tell my friends if a country seriously calls for help & its dire there really is only one that “ might “ step up and it’s the US so I say hang on tight to some of your finest traditions PLEASE !! I think that’s what

“Our Man Flint “really means when he’s ranting “ MAGA” his heart simply wants it to stay great and you guys are in a fight! I don’t want to hear your falling like Rome of old anymore. Your State of the Union always contains a cry of let’s have Integrity & Decency & Goodness. ( hey these have to ploughed in our lives ) not to be made light of. We need Hope !

  • State of the Union is obsolete because the other side doesn't like the poll results right now. Like the incumbent ( at any time) or not, it allows the people an opportunity to hear directly with no pundit filter. Like the incumbent ( at any time) or not, it allows the people an opportunity to hear directly with no pundit filter. We really are not as stupid as Wash pols & media like to assume because we might not know the correct wine to drink with our BBQ or use forks to eat fried chicken but most of us know the difference between wheat & chaff. Do they?

  • :;

  • I believe that the SOTU is important. It allows the president to outline their beliefs through a platform where there are no immediate responses. Its an adequate way for us as the people to see what the president wants to talk about and view them as, even if it means backlash and a lack of support

  • I clipped out approximately 40 minutes of the 90 minute speech that was just clapping and hooting. Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ0EG3MU1EE helps to focus on what he's trying to say...

  • Sure, the President nails it, and now you want to abolish it...

  • George Washington just sent a letter to Congress, like a boss.

  • The Union speech seem stupid? Cost too much for nothing huh?

It's necessary. It carry too much political weight to be abolished.

You have more than 300 M people to take care of, if you can win a few easy points in the poll by doing so and gain back stability by reuniting the whole country for one night

Add to that the "gifts" you can give to people, like better seats if they help you out.

Would ratter see Trump give someones 2 tickets than 2 millions.

Keep the apple with you, you need them to be the captain of your ship! But don't forget, not too much apple cause after that you got a revolution on your hands.

  • I feel the state of the union speech has gone downhill, it’s no longer about stating how our country is doing and what the president has on plan coming up and has turned into partisan blah blah you’ve already said that ...

  • So cable news like Fox and CNN can have Talking Heads on 24-7, 365, and Am radio and NPR rattle on all day about how they have The best political analysis, And journalist are complaining about having to give live coverage to the president for an hour and a 1/2 once a year.... Who the hell is "Pacific standard magazine" anyway? Never heard of it.

  • I listened to a snippet on NPR, as always speaking to his base, another campaign speech broadcast for free on every MSM outlet while he and his cronies rob the American Taxpayers blind. I listened to a snippet on NPR, as always speaking to his base, another campaign speech broadcast for free on every MSM outlet while he and his cronies rob the American Taxpayers blind. When we ever learn that is all that man knows how to do, is to give speeches to his base? Also for his supporters my satisfaction will come in the form of indictments from Mueller for Trump, the thought of him languishing in Ft Leavenworth makes me smile!

  • I think all the negative comments miss the point: everyone who hates trump wants it discontinued. I thought the speech was quite good , except for the plea to not investigate Trump. He has accomplished a lot in two years. Like any President his ego is his biggest attribute.

  • No

  • To save the Union we have grown with and loved, it is the Democratic Party which should be abolished. Socialism would sink our great country faster than a brick sinking in water.

  • SOTU has become total joke. It’s photo op for President and other elected officials to engage the public with bromides devoid of thoughtful public policy positions and statements

  • Well you better get started getting signatures and state legislatures voting. Call me when you reach Florida.

  • I guess there’s too much truth involved, and many have a difficult time accepting it.

  • It is essential for any leader to take the time to clearly spell out their positions in a manner the public can see. It is essential for any leader to take the time to clearly spell out their positions in a manner the public can see. The press is a wide variety of journalists and editors and media empire owners that interpret and translates and repackages literally every sentence the leader utters. I for one want to hear a formal report regularly from our leader directly and interpret it for myself. It is also essential to witness what the actual message is to the legislature.

We entrust our president with inside knowledge on global affairs that is often not safe to share publicly for negotiation or security reasons. The SOTU address gives the President a regular opportunity to update the nation at a high level without the message being regurgitated and key points being overlooked.

It is an essential part of our Republic.

  • I think the problem here is this is just becoming an outdated method of conveying information. In the era of Presidential tweets and 24 hour news cycles, tuning in at a set time to hear a speech which will just be quoted out of context by a dozen different interest groups is completely pointless.

  • Only when a politician is held accountable for their verbal promises is when I will begin caring about what they say. The State of the Union is a political show for the base of the President's party that has no real bearing on world events. Talk is cheap and ephemeral. Give me something real.

  • Time to end it
