Mars Rover Opportunity Is Dead After Record-Breaking 15 Years on Red Planet
Like so many things @nasa does, Spirit and Opportunity exceeded expectations, returned ground-breaking science, and inspired us to do more.
To quote Jed Bartlet:
"...as we did in a time when our eyes looked towards the heavens, and with outstretched fingers, we touched the face of God."
Long live Opportunity.
Imagine what could have been done if NASA had half the budget of the Deparment of Defense.
Wow such an amazing legacy for a robot to last so much longer then expected.
I wish we had more of this going on these days and less yelling and finger pointing. It's difficult to look down on someone if you're looking up.
Pretty epic conclusion for an iconic piece of technology that propelled our understanding of Mars several magnitudes. No doubt its Spirit lives on and with it a vast number of Opportunities lie ahead.
I remember watching these missions and hearing the stories of these rovers and that helped inspire me to pursue exploration of the world and universe around me, it touched the lives of more than one generation
This was much more than under-promise / over-deliver. This was architecture, engineering and quality assurance combining to a total much greater than simply the sum of its parts, leading to a nearly indestructible Rover that survived 15 years in a harsh environment without hardware maintenance. It's
This was much more than under-promise / over-deliver. This was architecture, engineering and quality assurance combining to a total much greater than simply the sum of its parts, leading to a nearly indestructible Rover that survived 15 years in a harsh environment without hardware maintenance. It's a testament to engineering that hopefully sets a new standard that all tech industries will strive toward meeting or be chided and shamed by when they don't.
RIP, Opportunity. You reminded us all why space exploration matters. Thank you for your service.
Opportunity lost.....on Mars.
Thanks to the rovers we understand Mars better now. I’m still not convinced a Mars settlement will be viable from a cost vs. benefit standpoint. At the very least I have to believe the technology being developed to explore Mars will have beneficial applications on earth.
Did it? Or did the aliens destroy it? We will never know! Government cover up?
Do they get triple aid on that,?
Amazing. Hence the expression “Opportunity rocks!”
Vale Opportunity; the longest serving member of the Martian robot colony.
Awwwww!! I spend too much time into seeing how Curiosity is doing.
Energizer Bunny of Space Probes
Amazing, what an achievement!
They going to replace it...
