Happy customers don’t translate into political power. But who really got damaged politically? Americans are voting on jobs, which NYC lost an estimated 25K of yesterday. Amazon pulled out over tax incentives that progressive Dems opposed, but New Yorkers largely supported.

In our Jan Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, economy and jobs are among the most important issues facing the country in voter’s minds while Americans credit Trump for handling the economy and stimulating jobs (57% vs 51% in July) and a key factor in his rising approval rating.

At the same time fewer voters say their financial situation is improving (31% from 38% in in Aug). So a framing of the Dems as anti-business centrists is a danger to swing voters as the 2020 election heats up. In fact, Biden has a 56% approval rating vs. 36% for Elizabeth Warren, the next highest rated Dem in the Presidential race. (Trump is 41%).

Tone deaf title and article. Amazon didn’t lose a popularity contest. Amazon didn’t miscalculate. Amazon simply had a great BATNA - best alternative to a negotiated agreement. This article portrays the local politicians and opposition leaders as the parties with the real power. Sadly, those groups overplayed their hands. Amazon doesn’t need to deal with unpopular, radical, short sighted, unsophisticated, socialist troublemakers. Amazon will now take its 25K plus high paying jobs to cities that will welcome the company with open arms. Meanwhile, Queens will remain home to the NY Mets.
