  • This budget request includes a proposed cut of $1 billion from the National Science Foundation (to $7.1B from $8.1B). If enacted, it would be burning the seed corn of innovation.

We at the Gates Foundation are frustrated that President Trump has doubled down with his latest proposed cuts. Life-saving and life-changing leadership that improves health and expands opportunity is vital to our country’s interests and our country’s future. We’ll continue to make the case that now is not the time to turn our backs on the most vulnerable.

  • Don’t know offhand when Congress last passed a budget on time, but it has been over 20 years. And Congress never passed a budget during at least two of the Obama years.

So it’s pretty safe to say Congress is either unwilling or unable to pass a budget. And since it’s Trump’s budget, they’re definitely unwilling no matter what. And their inability to do anything else makes a strong case for also being unable.

    Two words: Term limits.

Some feel it is important for the government to get out of the charity business. Public-based, governmental charity comes with all the burdens of bureaucratic oversight, which lead to bloat, corruption, graft, cronyism, and inefficiencies. Private individuals and organizations, which have driven the most effective charities, need to again be brought front and center. Giving to and working for charities enriches the human condition, and those who receive charity need to see it comes from actual people who value them. This exchange of value is lost when the faceless government steals from some people to give to others; and the politicians, who genuinely added nothing, get the accolades.

  • And this idea of government charity and the poor and disabled who somehow become undeserving of anything but church handouts leaves us 33 rd among nations that use progressive taxation to keep themselves way ahead of us in so many areas, financially, societally, and livability. Crow all you like about the benefits of our neoliberal capitalism, but you won’t see any Norwegians beating down the door to live here.

  • It's weird watching the US become a failed state so quickly. I mean, it took the British Empire 42 years between the beginning of WWI and the Suez Canal Crisis to peter out, but the GOP and the Trump Administration are really going for the land speed record with failed policies, both foreign and domestic

I mean, it took the British Empire 42 years between the beginning of WWI and the Suez Canal Crisis to peter out, but the GOP and the Trump Administration are really going for the land speed record with failed policies, both foreign and domestic, and literally declaring a war on its own people.

  • My initial thought is about these cuts to healthcare... is that couldn’t healthcare be delivered for less? Pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, doctors... essentially the wealthy are holding the health or our citizens hostage.

If it’s so important to our future... shouldn’t it cost less to provide?

  • Capitalism has become a dirty word because the country has been run by politicians who never started or ran a business, made payroll and making and keeping a BUDGET. They have no concept of a BUDGET. Politicians especially on the LEFT have failed to take a long view of economic and social well-being

Capitalism has become a dirty word because the country has been run by politicians who never started or ran a business, made payroll and making and keeping a BUDGET. They have no concept of a BUDGET. Politicians especially on the LEFT have failed to take a long view of economic and social well-being, (see the New Green Deal) (Obamacare) . What they have managed to do very well is becoming wealthy at the expense of TAXPAYERS by aggrandizing themselves and their family members. Long story short, instead of ACTUALLY ADDRESSING THE COUNTRYS IMMEDIATE NEEDS of roads and infrastructure. Who wants to raise kids in an environment of corruption in government propped up by a small group of billionaires who think the only thing worth living for is rapacious wealth gathering at the expense of everything else and using the hammer of an increasingly autocratic government to get their way? We as a Nation MUST STOP the insidious

  • It's Assumed that the current spending levels are correct.... that may not be valid. And, who is go say that the proposed spending could not be used MORE effectively them the previous budget amt.?
