  • Headline is a bit misleading: this is mostly about cratering perceptions of US leadership after 2017, when President Trump was inaugurated. China isn’t really on the rise: it had higher scores a decade ago. Germany has higher scores than both the US and China.

  • It’s as if something shockingly terrible happened to the US’s leadership in 2016. I can’t think of what that might be. Regarding China, theres no doubt that China’s 1.4 billion citizens will play a huge role in influencing the course of the world. The sooner we’re aware of this the better.

  • The larger question is the longevity of this global good will towards China. Belt and Road has hit multiple roadblocks throughout southeast Asia, many African countries are beginning to push back against China's economic colonialism and at home there is a generation of middle class, educated and globally

The larger question is the longevity of this global good will towards China. Belt and Road has hit multiple roadblocks throughout southeast Asia, many African countries are beginning to push back against China's economic colonialism and at home there is a generation of middle class, educated and globally experienced Chinese who, while patriotic, are questioning some of the surveillance techniques practiced by their government. With Donald Trump's erratic presidency, China's ascendancy is actually amplified, probably more than its actual influence. Only time and tempered policies will tell.

  • "a diplomatic angle that emphasizes national sovereignty and rejects foreign meddling in the name of human rights or democracy."

That being said, there is plenty of foreign meddling if a nation is unable to repay their Chinese loans - which is at least part of China’s design. Ask Sri Lanka about that

That being said, there is plenty of foreign meddling if a nation is unable to repay their Chinese loans - which is at least part of China’s design. Ask Sri Lanka about that sometime. They can just send you a picture of the deep water port, built with Chinese money, by Chinese contractors, that China now has a 99 year lease for in exchange for forgiving Sri Lanka’s defaulting loans.

What is frankly irritating however, is the myopic view by the administration that America First is mutually exclusive to having a robust international presence. Nature and politics both abhor a vacuum.

  • I think Chinese sentiment is also quite low, but it will soon be the #1 global country.

The Trump administration has failed miserably with China. We are not the not nation who have faced unfair trade practices and theft of intellectual property! If we had teamed up with the EU, Japan, Australia, and Canada well would of been able to have a strong enough influence on the Chinese to actually create substantial change. But NO Trump first ticked off every ally trade partner we have have, and went it along against China. He enacted tariffs that have hurt us as much if not more than China. Btw it seems he thinks China pays the tariffs, but that is a whole mother story.

So now if we do see change you can expect that it will be menial at best. Although Trump will parade around like it’s the best deal ever! Psssh like his great NAFTA negotiations which were basically the same ones agreed upon by Canada and Mexico under Obama.

  • Because we are no longer rolling over and playing dead, letting other countries run all over us all the while giving them billions of dollars!

  • The Trump dumpster fire is getting hotter and hotter.

  • Maybe because we quite giving away so much stuff

  • Thank you President Trump.
