  • How Fox News is stealing generations of parents and other older relatives from their more independent/liberal leaning younger children. A lot of people have said the can relate to this. And it’s quite depressing but older people tend to be conservative about their media choices—and yet this feels different, much worse

  • After reading this article/creative nonfiction, the salient point is what’s missing: nobody listening. After reading this article/creative nonfiction, the salient point is what’s missing: nobody listening. There is a father’s anger but nobody asks why - the author assumes it’s the nemesis of Fox News. A mother gives an opinion about a police killing and the child reacts in revulsion but doesn’t pursue the conversation further, just shuts down the relationship; there is no: “Why do you say that mom?” These fractious relationships are not only the result of conservative news (I’m sure the same can be said about liberal news). It’s the result of the “outrage culture” and “reactionary culture” where the emotions stirred by a statement or an opinion act as a full stop to a conversation, even relationships it would seem, per the article. Reactions are good, but don’t you want to know why your father that which made you feel so angry? He has an opinion too. And maybe listening would help you understand him, author, even if you still don’t agree.
