  • For those who think this is some kind of acceptable "just desserts" for the kids involved, remember that these monitors are an intrusion on the privacy of their friends & family, as well as anyone else who has contact with them.

  • While the genie is out of this bottle would it not have been simpler to have LEDs and alarms to tell these kids they have to do something like call the probation officer. I can just hear some busybodies telling children off because they can or listening to private family conversations because they can

I can just hear some busybodies telling children off because they can or listening to private family conversations because they can. Petty authority usually leads to petty behavior.

  • Electronic monitoring often gets portrayed, with some justification, as an alternative to incarceration. But think of the downsides here. Besides the obvious privacy implications that get explained well in the article, we have to wonder what effect it has on someone's future to treat a 15-year-old like

Electronic monitoring often gets portrayed, with some justification, as an alternative to incarceration. But think of the downsides here. Besides the obvious privacy implications that get explained well in the article, we have to wonder what effect it has on someone's future to treat a 15-year-old like a hardened felon. Be careful what you wish for.

  • “The stated purpose of these devices is to communicate with the children, but they are raising concerns among civil liberties watchers that they are actually a mechanism for surveilling the conversations of these kids and those around them—and potentially for using the recordings in criminal cases.

This brings new meaning to, “anything you say may be used against you in a court of law.”

  • Creepy. Disturbing. Another tool on the school to prison pipeline. Orwell’s vision wasn’t even this messed up...

  • Wow. Really?

I'm surprised there aren't more legislative safeguards in place to protect minors. Despite the offense, they are still under 18 years old and deserve to have their privacy respected as though they were adults.

  • Brilliant- sounds stupid, potentially dangerous and like a waste of time (simultaneously)...

  • Given the fact that there is disclosure about the capabilities of the device, and as it is court-ordered electronic monitoring, this does not seem as severe or as much an issue as devices in homes and persons where the intended uses not an electronic monitoring device. Given the fact that there is disclosure about the capabilities of the device, and as it is court-ordered electronic monitoring, this does not seem as severe or as much an issue as devices in homes and persons where the intended uses not an electronic monitoring device. Several times over the past few years Alexa data has been subpoenaed as evidence. The fact that these devices and voice activated solutions and phones are able to be used as electronic monitoring should be of greater concern than when it is court-ordered and disclosed.

  • People say just be a good citizen and you won’t have to worry about anything. But this is a severe breach of privacy especially on kids that are being rehabilitated. Imagine always feeling like your being watched and if you say even one wrong thing you’ll be locked in a cage. That’s immense psychological

People say just be a good citizen and you won’t have to worry about anything. But this is a severe breach of privacy especially on kids that are being rehabilitated. Imagine always feeling like your being watched and if you say even one wrong thing you’ll be locked in a cage. That’s immense psychological pressure that can easily crush the strongest of us especially since as a youth your not in control of your environment which adds social pressures. So before we disregard these issues that don’t affect us and give opinions on matters that have never remotely been apart not affected your life don’t judge individuals you know nothing of

  • Wow. The kid is 15. If there is no attempt at reform, kids will be turned into hardened criminals in their mid-teens.

  • Oh my, I see at least 3 major issues here. Relinquished freedom for slavery...oh sorry I mean safety. Wasn’t there someone that said “Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” - Ben Franklin. Also, more correlations for kids

Wasn’t there someone that said “Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” - Ben Franklin. Also, more correlations for kids and prison?? We’re preparing everybody to go through prison with the schools. There’s too many similarities now. Then you touch on the issue of forcibly taking these “kids” right to privacy away from them. I doubt they’re brought into the discussion in a way that respects their human right to privacy. Smh they’re treated these kids like cattle they own.

  • We are already being watched and listened to by the NSA. The federal government doesn’t like competition.
