  • There is a certain comedy to Tumblr’s story. Though I digress.

Tumblr is a very different platform in many ways. It has not however, lent itself to be hugely useful to news media outlets, or high volume/profile media organizations for the most part. They never seemed to really fit.

    Tumblr is also so

Tumblr is a very different platform in many ways. It has not however, lent itself to be hugely useful to news media outlets, or high volume/profile media organizations for the most part. They never seemed to really fit.

Tumblr is also so much more than a prior haven for adult content. It has a distinct culture, a gold mine of talented individuals, and its user base is incredibly young. There is real value in that, and many of those users are extremely dedicated to the platform.

  • Tumblr was sold at a ~80x multiple and is the most overlooked example of a major exit that devastated the original product.

It would be ironic if Pornhub could act as a savior to a community and platform that was destroyed by the more “acceptable” businesses of the digital age. It’s like your drunk

  • No one wants to say it but this makes so, so much sense. With some further thought, it could also be messy.

Tumblr had a healthy, creative, and supportive community around different sexualities and interests. The social network didn't see that--or they didn't know how to protect the communities in the face of increasing regulation. I wonder if PornHub ownership would bring Tumblr users back... and how would PornHub protect the flourishing communities, originality, and also ensure safety? One could wonder if Tumblr as it was would return or if it would devolve into a PornHub mess.

  • Less than a year after removing all adult content Verizon is looking to pull the plug. Will new owners see things differently? Or is the backpage / craigslist personals / tumblr porn era of the web totally finito?

  • Hard to make money without a business model.

  • The porn industry has been an innovation leader for decades. Video streaming, upload platforms, likes & comments, social networks, on demand content ... all of those have their roots in the porn industry. Now imagine what Pornhub will be able to do with the highly creative crowd that drives Tumblr.

  • I completely forgot that Verizon owned Yahoo now (who owns Tumblr). Not really surprising they want to offload it— much like Reddit, Tumblr is a platform with basically stagnant (though steady) monetization ability. All it really has for money-making is ad serving, which is enough to sustain it, but

Not really surprising they want to offload it— much like Reddit, Tumblr is a platform with basically stagnant (though steady) monetization ability. All it really has for money-making is ad serving, which is enough to sustain it, but not enough to satisfy a multinational conglomerate’s monomaniacal desire for growth.

Edit: Pornhub buying Tumblr would be absolutely hilarious, but surprisingly logical. It was pretty stupid, business-wise, to completely ban porn on Tumblr; that’s what a sizable and not-so-secret chunk of the site always was.

“Jokes about Pornhub buying Tumblr have been circulating since the porn ban, after the platform tweeted about embracing Tumblr's pornographic refugees.”

  • The first acquisition of Tumblr was a huge waste of time and money. Nothing more than an attempt to buy a “community” wholesale. Pornhub could change the focus of the company and make it quite a successful site - albeit a strange one...

  • For Tumblr, it's very much on brand. Not sure why it took pornhub this long to consider. It's an opportunity for pH to expand the brand and pursue upscale porn customers.

  • More than any other potential acquisition, this one probably should be scrutinized heavily by any regulator. Not offering any opinion about the pornography industry, but rather looking at the competitive landscape, buying Tumblr would actually give mindgeek a portfolio that would create a de facto Monopoly

More than any other potential acquisition, this one probably should be scrutinized heavily by any regulator. Not offering any opinion about the pornography industry, but rather looking at the competitive landscape, buying Tumblr would actually give mindgeek a portfolio that would create a de facto Monopoly that extends into social media. Setting aside any issues about mindgeek for their politics or their management styles, their use of and ethics in technology coupled with these antitrust issues should raise enough red flags for any merger to be heavily scrutinized.

  • Could this be the next step in social porn and further movement of porn into mainstream? Or is this the final blow to a platform that was once full of potential and has seen this whittled down as it is passed round the block?

  • If they handle acquisitions the way Fintech handles acquisitions, everyone with a Tumblr account will be automatically enrolled in a Pornhub account.

Deleting the account will require an acknowledgment that you have an account. Guess you all will just have to stay subscribed.

  • Well, I think we would see a bright future in this old Yahoo cornerstone. I just keep on thinking: what was the plan, the original one, Marissa Meyer had and the one actually rolling out.

  • If “tumblr” isn’t already slang for some kind of sex act, it should be.

  • The plot twist to Tumblr is incredible...

  • More likely to be a successful as a lean ad supported business but is that a “real” business model in today’s world?

  • And in a year from now Disney+ will buy it all.

  • Interesting

  • this is super interesting, and smart of PH

  • Tumblr will become the Penthouse forum of PH
