  • “...getting angry at social media is only ever going to be pointless and harmful. This is an opportunity, not a problem.”

As someone who loves to hate social media, this was an interesting read to see the other side.

Great points are made about room for education, sharing the wealth of natural resources

Great points are made about room for education, sharing the wealth of natural resources, making actual profits, and of course, that digital can’t truly kill, but I’ll still be a hater at times.

  • This author is a bit crass and exhibits throughout this article his unearned privilege as a white male in the U.S of A. There are some reasonably decent points I agreed with and yet, many crucial points of problematic issues were left out. He has a platform and with it an opportunity, nay, a responsibility

This author is a bit crass and exhibits throughout this article his unearned privilege as a white male in the U.S of A. There are some reasonably decent points I agreed with and yet, many crucial points of problematic issues were left out. He has a platform and with it an opportunity, nay, a responsibility, to broaden his awareness and illuminate other issues that are reeling havoc at this time in space. TOMS in theory looks like a great company and indeed has seemed to be one of the ‘good guys’ of capitalism but that is a narrow viewpoint. The repercussions of their program have negatively impacted industry in the communities they are aiming to support in other countries.

This comment space isn’t big enough to get into greater depth though I really wish for us to recognize that we are in the late stages of capitalism and this colonial culture that perpetuates white supremacy is all leading us off the cliff. Sure, selfies don’t kill people, sure, social media maybe isn’t the problem, but is that what we should be focusing on right now? It is high time we shift our narratives. Treat the environmental breakdown, social injustice, racial inequity, and perpetual growth culture we’re a part of with the attention hey need and start to take responsibility for this mess we’re in. We need to radically alter our collective behaviors and build new culture, perspectives, and mythologies. Climate chaos will force our hand in this anyways, it already is.

    End rant...
