    For a journalist, it’s one thing to receive and report on secret information provided by an independent, third-party informant source. A third-party actively involved in the process of taking said information separately, on their own independent initiative, and later choosing to inform a member of the press.

    It is something different to be one actively involved in stealing classified information, and then proceeding to publish it themselves.

    If one is actively involved in the process of stealing classified information, is that not illegal? Does the fact they then go on to publish it themselves absolve them of that crime, thereby providing them with first amendment protections?
