  • I daresay if we looked at what we are doing in Western Europe and the US to monitor parts of the population that worry our governments, we’d probably find some shocking stuff too. Not making excuses, just saying there’s a lot of powerful politics and hypocrisy driving these stories on China right now.

  • Travel to China, they said. Get the authentic experience, they said.

  • Pardon my paranoia but carrying personal electronics across any border can be problematic especially for journalists. That border guards in China are installing surveillance apps should not surprise anyone. What would be surprising is if China is alone in doing this.

  • Journalists do not need to be told that they are being tracked by an app in China. This should have been an assumption before they even hit the border. On top of which if they are being asked to hand over their phones and ice to hand their PIN numbers to officials, it does not take any deductive reasoning

Journalists do not need to be told that they are being tracked by an app in China. This should have been an assumption before they even hit the border. On top of which if they are being asked to hand over their phones and ice to hand their PIN numbers to officials, it does not take any deductive reasoning to figure out that they have had an app installed. As far as Chinese technology is concerned, having to have a pin number and waiting an hour to have the phone returned is tantamount to being informed that you are being tracked and that something was installed into the phone. If a journalist is not clever enough to understand that, how are they doing their job as journalists?

  • People forget that it's a surveillance state, with technology provided by US, Israeli, etc companies.

  • “Edin Omanović, of the campaign group Privacy International, described the findings as ‘highly alarming in a country where downloading the wrong app or news article could land you in a detention camp.’”

  • Tariff that app!

  • Deeply disturbing and a reminder to learn just how terrifyingly mature the American surveillance state has been for over a decade. For a start, watch the excellent “Citizenfour” directed by Laura Poitras.

  • Hohum....China blah blah. Everyone country is spying on everyone including their own citizens. In fact likely mostly their own citizens in attempt to weed out the denezins. Hello #Snowden. Welcome to #1984. You've officially arrived.
