As I expected things continue to heat up in Hong Kong. I'm now quite worried that I'll be returning into my adopted city just as things intensify further next week. Protestors successfully closed the airport on Monday after a weekend of violence. Now the Chinese government is branding the protestors terrorists ready to escalate a response. I would suspect that the Hong Kong police might ratchet things up first. Failing that the People's police will be sent in with tanks. The last thing the mainland government wants to do is have a protestor killed by a PLA soldier. Would be front page news around the world. Sadly this might actually be the goal of some fringe elements amongst the protestors, including any foreign influence which wants to destabilise China. I was predicting a Hong Kong crisis in 2020. Seemed to have started early. Longer term I'm positive on the Greater Bay Area. But alas its going to be a rocky road ahead.

  • There really is a need to separate fact from fiction or fake news. The video that is circulating all over news and social media of troop movements on the opposite side of the Hong Kong border is completely fake news, the video is actually military exercises across the Taiwan Straits in Fujian. China has been stepping up rhetoric against the protesters, and it is definitely making a media campaign along with leveraging influencers on social media, but it has not started troop movements into Hong Kong to stop terrorists. media really need to be much more responsible and not incite what is already a dangerous situation.
