Bottom-line: we need to fix our broken education, healthcare, and loan/debt system in the USA.

More than DOUBLED over less than a decade?!

Bottom-line: we need to fix our broken education, healthcare, and loan/debt system in the USA.

This is incredibly sad to read, yes social media plays a role but it isn't the root cause. I work with and talk to lots of college kids and younger. One 20 year old (who was suicidal and depressed) explained it best to me:

"The high cost of college education and debt, low chance of graduating with a job you love or even a good paying job where it can cover your basic needs thanks to all the debt payments you racked up, healthcare expenses if you're really sick, the thought of and high chance of living at home with your parents after college, the rising inequality (as displayed prominently on social media). Kids feel hand cuffed and not free."

"Social media amplifies these huge fears and insecurities but it isn't the cause, in fact, many young people look up to the influencer generation (happy, beautiful YouTubers to Instagram stars) because they are doing what they love and living their lives--they are FREE and I'm not, life is hard and there isn't much hope for me to want to live past 30 years old because I feel hopelessly handcuffed working to just pay off my debt I have or will accumulate."

You feel like a failure and not living up to your family, friends, and your own expectations. Put yourself in their shoes, it is truly depressing and you feel so helpless. And not many people, including your own family and close friends really know what you are going through 😔

How can you feel free if you are in massive amount of debt? When I paid off all my debt, the feeling of financial freedom is so powerful, it changed my entire perspective and outlook on life. Being in debt and having that hang over you causes lots of insecurity.

So many millennials are delaying marriage to not buying a house at a certain age like previous generations, to having to live with their parents after college, and if they do get married, they are taking out massive amount of debt at sometimes double digit % interest rates to have that magical wedding. They own that and it's their decision to take out such a loan, but USA's loaning system can be quite predatory.

Social pressure, social media amplifies these underlying root causes, but social media is not to fully blame, it is a technology not a cause--social media is everywhere in the world but out of control education and healthcare expenses is especially acute in the USA vs other developed (and much happier) countries in Europe for example.
