  • Unions will be helpful in creating more equitable tech companies.

  • Celebrate Labor Day by reading our semi-official “state of the Unions”

  • Again lots of number crunching, objective data analysis and mini case studies. One of the many reasons why reading articles and paying for it seems to make sense nowadays. Kudos to the Quartz team!

Power moves as a pendulum; alternating between workers and organizations. The time is ripe for some unions, but still limited. One thing in the potential union’s favor is the strong economy. In time of near-full employment competition gives workers power.

One thing that I find most interesting is the common theme of workers seeking voice. It seems that people may perceive that they collectively can influence the organization through their union. History shows this to be a lightly trodden path at best.

Unions themselves are a business, basically they provide a service, representation, in exchange for a fee in the form of dues. Once in place their business model is to try to maximize revenue. Altruism isn’t a revenue maximizing activity. Perhaps this time will be different. But I wouldn’t make that bet with my own money.

  • So the real headline should be "unions push for relevance at places where low-skill, commodity work is happening and workers have low wages"... Hmm... Sounds like the 1880's...

  • Organizing defines how social change happens, whether in the workplace or in the world at large.

  • A move in the right direction?

The creation of unions, whether they are of traditional structure or not, clearly depicts how individuals have to not only stand up but group up with others of shared interest to advocate for a structural change, most likely of improvements and creation of new legislations and such, regarding the treatments of their products and labor in markets that are changing so fast.

Governments are highly inefficient in doing their job of not just managing the infrastructure that exists, but also improving them and creating new infrastructures to adjust it’s structure to the disruptive shifts happening in industries today.

People will have to push their governments to adapt faster for everyone’s sake. And the push better be stronger than ever.

I wouldn’t even dare imagine what levels of destruction and chaos the slow and outdated bureaucratic governments would bring if left to rot.
