  • Facebook Dating faces a bigger problem than privacy concerns: it‘s not cool. People want to date hip singles, not their mom’s friends and the coworker who posts too many pictures of her terrier.

  • I am that co-worker who posts too many pictures of my terrier tribe Apollo, Aurora and Jesse. 🤣😂🙌

Westerners, especially US-based don't understand how big of a deal Facebook is outside the West—so I can see this getting traction on multiple Asian countries. Heck, it might even work in the US w/ the secret crush thing b/c it can lead to surprise and delight connections you never thought possible or...to cheating haha.

The big thing is not to be intrusive, so Facebook has to navigate this very very carefully, for example, FB Gaming streaming (which is huge in Philippines and SEA countries) is a little too much—when you go live to stream on FB, it attaches streams in group posts. Even on posts where people promote their twitch streams—they put an FB live of the same game from their own platform.

If they do that with dating, it'll be dead on arrival. But it doesn't sound like they will.

  • Do not want. Neither should you.

  • Like the old country music hit goes: “Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places...”

  • Facebook is big and still popular outside US where data privacy issue is still new/ untouched/ not a concern. If those countries and users start using FB dating then it might become a new thing.

Essentially Facebook is trying to offer multiple services within a same app.

  • In response to commentary by Jane & Joannne: I think people who post too many pictures of their terriers want to date people who post too many pictures of their terriers. ☺️

Good to see this come to fruition so soon after testing. Difficult indeed to manage but I think Facebook's hit it on the nose

  • What a great idea. Way behind the curve though. Maybe the plan is just to grow behind the scenes?

  • Facebook Dating: The moving tale of a brave single woman in her mid-to-late 30s who is about to find out nobody has a secret crush on her

  • Sure there is a market. The majority is no hype but enjoying simple life and Aldi. So if for many Fb Dating is kind of not attractive well in the massive user base there are tons of people who will not bother because they just don't care. It's probably an unattended segment. It worked in so many countries

  • I will keep my relationship with Facebook purely Platonic, but it may be too late even for that. Facebook, the virtual equivalent of the Hotel California.

  • My mom doesn’t even have Facebook anymore. 🤣

  • Hah I guess we were one of the other countries (🇨🇦) cause I’ve had one but didn’t even sign up to it, it just appeared randomly after one of the many random updates Facebook has

  • Faux relationships based upon faux profiles each one currated by individuals driven by fantasy and vanity.

  • I can see some major privacy issues here and FB has a proven problem with privacy issues.
