  • ... okay, seriously, Jonathan—WHAT?

Frazen has been well-know for exploring his unpopular opinions through his novels; his decree in "Freedom" (via a couple of characters) that it's irresponsible to have children because of overpopulation issues caused quite a ruckus. But this is a whole other level

    ... okay, seriously, Jonathan—WHAT?

Frazen has been well-know for exploring his unpopular opinions through his novels; his decree in "Freedom" (via a couple of characters) that it's irresponsible to have children because of overpopulation issues caused quite a ruckus. But this is a whole other level of dragon-poking.

Accepting the gravity of the situation we've gotten ourselves into is one thing—rolling over and playing dead is quite another.

  • The Earth s climate has been changing at least since blue-green algae moved toward oxidization. There have been warming & cooling cycles almost as long ( think dinosaurs & ice ages). The evidence is not irrefutable that current problems are solely due to human beings although I do not doubt they contribute

The Earth s climate has been changing at least since blue-green algae moved toward oxidization. There have been warming & cooling cycles almost as long ( think dinosaurs & ice ages). The evidence is not irrefutable that current problems are solely due to human beings although I do not doubt they contribute. But, there are other things that could be contributing as they have over millennia (interglacial status, warming prior to potential magnetic polar shift, solar activity, plate tectonics, items as yet unidentified). We have insufficient evidence - not collected over enough time to draw incontovertible evidence. Homosapiens have thrived in warming climates & suffered in cooling climates. Maybe this is not bad?

The current hysteria proposes totally unrealistic solutions & ignores mitigating actions that could really help. Instead of fixing an inefficient electrical grid, they propose outlawing affordable generation; outlaw cars but don't touch my cell phones - great for NYC but a disaster for Crosbyton, TX. Too many people - pay for other people's ( less desireables) abortions. Why not just implement The Lottery & select a third of that overpopulation to exterminate? And, of course, the fix has to be done in less than 10 years - whether feasible or not. If we only have a decade, we are screwed so maybe we ought to hear from a variety of knowledgeable sources & not just faux environmentalists who don't want to shoot Bambi or control burn forests. Now, there were environmental disasters.

  • Unpopular opinion:

so I think it's ok if for every 1000 articles talking about how to save the planet we get 1 that says "what if we're fucked!?"

caveat - I'm a huge fan of franzen's fiction so perhaps biased towards his defense

  • The climate deniers and the climate doomsayers are on extreme opposite ends of the climate debate (why are we still debating this?), yet fully aligned with what the petroleum industry wants us all to believe. No climate change? Drill baby drill. We're doomed? May as well drill baby drill. The science

The climate deniers and the climate doomsayers are on extreme opposite ends of the climate debate (why are we still debating this?), yet fully aligned with what the petroleum industry wants us all to believe. No climate change? Drill baby drill. We're doomed? May as well drill baby drill. The science (truth) lies elsewhere and certainly not with Mr. Franzen, who primarily writes fiction and continues to do so in his article.

  • A no-nonsense view at the global warming problem.
