From a hardware perspective, nothing Apple announced today was particularly shocking. The new iPhones are more or less on par with the major Android competitors (or perhaps slightly below in terms of additional gimmicks). The new Apple Watch and iPads seem like solid upgrades. But what Apple did announce today that was surprising was the pricing for its forthcoming Apple TV+ streaming service, which will set you back just $5/month. That's considerably less than any other major streaming option, and definitely a shot at Disney, Netflix, and everyone else in the space. Apple is trying to lock more customers ever-deeper into its ecosystem as iPhone sales flag, but the question is whether the content on Apple TV+ (and Apple Arcade, its new gaming service) will actually live up to the competitors. Even for the low price, what it's shown so far was pretty uninspiring.
