Good evening.

Moving forward

The best and worst airlines for carry-on luggage. Since bag dimensions are not standard, what is allowed on one airline can be too big or heavy on another. We did an analysis of the rules of 110 airlines to discover which dimensions are more common.

Is this how unions of the 21st century get their start? The article references declining membership in traditional unions but I’d speculate that this decline is largely because industrial-era unions are bureaucratic behemoths that are just as demanding for workers as the companies themselves - just ask auto-workers for GM right now.

The old model of unionization has gone stale. It hardly works at all in the industries it currently serves and doesn’t have the chops to handle the newer tech industries that have cropped up in the last 30 years. Time for a fresh take on fighting the man.

How marathons became big business. Running has evolved from an unglamorous, inexpensive, and accessible sport to one increasingly shaped by PR firms and advertising dollars.

It should also be no surprise that the aspirations of these ultra-high achievers is ripe to be co-opted by brands for profit.

The way we work

How can you stay happy at work as a longtime employee? After years in the same position, a promotion always helps. But surprisingly, LinkedIn data shows that lateral career moves can be almost as effective to keep employees in place and satisfied.

The surprisingly effective retention power of lateral career moves

I’ve done several cross-functional job changes that were lateral moves, and I believe each actually helped me accelerate my career trajectory. Talking with a colleague in HR once, she noted that often companies are now talking about “career lattices” not just career ladders. In a world that is becoming

I’ve done several cross-functional job changes that were lateral moves, and I believe each actually helped me accelerate my career trajectory. Talking with a colleague in HR once, she noted that often companies are now talking about “career lattices” not just career ladders. In a world that is becoming ever more automated, we need workers who can think across functional boundaries to achieve enterprise-wide results.

Cryptic crypto

Facebook’s crypto could become a regulated security. CNBC reports that a new US bill is backed by a bipartisan group who weren’t impressed with Zuck’s testimony at a recent House Financial Services hearing.

New bill would make Facebook's cryptocurrency a security under the law, inviting greater regulation

Mariah Carey's holding strong. "AIWFC" is already ranked at No. 39 this year for the week of Nov. 23—this year it was apparently boosted by previously unreleased footage from 1994 video shoot.

I'm amused that "AIWFC" is charting before Thanksgiving/Black Friday. I can support 45 days of holidays haha

ETFs are eating the market

What happens in a flash crash? And how are they related to ETFs? One of the big questions about ETFs is the extent to which their rapid growth has led to an increasing number of flash crashes and a greater risk for the mother of all liquidity events. A financial advisor who manages millions of dollars in assets describes his experience of one. ✦

It’s alive! ETFs as Frankenstein

While ETFs have done a lot of good for investors, they bear a certain resemblance to the aggregated financial products that set off the last financial crisis, especially newer forms of "synthetic ETFs" that are derivatives of equities and bonds. While ETFs have done a lot of good for investors, they bear a certain resemblance to the aggregated financial products that set off the last financial crisis, especially newer forms of "synthetic ETFs" that are derivatives of equities and bonds. It's not hard to imagine how, in the event of broader market downturn, the small liquidity crises, or flash crashes, described in this piece could snowball into a much bigger market meltdown. 😬

The new face of education

Employers shouldn’t obsess over hiring elite students. Hiring from lesser-known colleges can benefit companies in surprising ways.

Only recruiting the smartest students is a dumb hiring strategy.

It is really important to hire people who have the humility to take feedback and the confidence to give it. The college elite may not always bring that to the table. It is also equally important to get people from a wider section of the society, especially if you are building a startup that would cater to the entire country.

Buying, mindlessly

Who’s in charge of Christmas?

Quartz looked at the Mariah Carey data last year. The results will...probably not surprise you: Christmas creep is officially now measured by when “AIWFC” charts.

Measuring Christmas creep through “All I Want for Christmas Is You”

This post goes great with my favorite Spotify playlist, which is just "All I want for Christmas is You" 100 times.

US troops ditch Syria for Iraq. The largest pullback to date of American forces from Syria is underway as hundreds of armored vehicles ferry all but 200 military staff out of the country and into Iraq, where they are expected to continue battling with the Islamic State, the Wall Street Journal reports.

  • US troops leaving Syria are going to...Iraq (where there is indeed a bigger ISIS problem).

Add the new US troops in Saudi Arabia and Middle East and US troop levels under Trump are going up.

  • More distraction by withdrawing the troops to allow Turkey to decimate the Kurds, and freeing ISIS to start building up again. More distraction by withdrawing the troops to allow Turkey to decimate the Kurds, and freeing ISIS to start building up again. Meanwhile, instead of removing from harms way, as he has been constantly lying, the soldiers go to fight ISIS in Iraq? Are any of the politicians or military leaders going to stand up to his idiocy at least to his face? Whispering in the background hasn't accomplished anything. Trump is feckless and impulsive, and betraying the Kurds who fought and died alongside our soldiers fighting ISIS. The winners are Russian influence with Middle Eastern leaders, Erdrogan and the Turkish military, and ISIS.

  • Note that Trump’s withdrawal from Syria did not even result in our troops “coming home”— they’ve just been shuffled around a bit within the same general area, flipping from one side of the border to the other. There’s really very little material consequence to the move at all, except to put our soldiers

Note that Trump’s withdrawal from Syria did not even result in our troops “coming home”— they’ve just been shuffled around a bit within the same general area, flipping from one side of the border to the other. There’s really very little material consequence to the move at all, except to put our soldiers farther away from where they need to be... and to clear a path for Turkey and their affiliate militias to rape and pillage their way through Kurdish territory.
