There are only 59 named women on the world’s most valuable banknotes. We looked at 622 bank notes from the 75 largest economies. If women are depicted, they are often anonymous: A farmer picking cotton in Angola, a scientist in Canada, and dancers in Indonesia.

  • A particularly disappointing moment when gathering data for this piece: In my home country, Canada, I was happy to see a female scientist using a microscope on one of the bank notes. Celebrating women in STEM! But after I looked closer, it was actually an unnamed woman and the text celebrated the microscope inventor — a man.
