    A few years ago at Davos, the White House chef Sam Kass threw a chocolate and wine lunch, featuring things we wouldn’t have in 50 years or so. Wonder how many essential things have disappeared like this but less noticed because we don’t enjoy them as much in more recreational forms?

    First, it was bananas. Now it is chocolate. This is not good news. What would be the joy of life without chocolate chip cookies to dip in warm milk, double fudge brownies, and double fudge chocolate cake!

  • We must buy Cocoa/Chocolates with a fair price. Cocoa farmers do not have power to negotiate with buyers, usually giant companies. Cheap chocolates must have some reason why we can buy with such a cheap price.

    If we buy them with a fair price, price must go high. However, it is necessarily to maintain sustainability of Cocoa ecosystem. A good example is “Dari K” based in Kyoto, Japan funded by Mr. Keiichi YOSHINO, a former investment banker. He is working together with farmers in Sulawesi Island

    We must buy Cocoa/Chocolates with a fair price. Cocoa farmers do not have power to negotiate with buyers, usually giant companies. Cheap chocolates must have some reason why we can buy with such a cheap price.

    If we buy them with a fair price, price must go high. However, it is necessarily to maintain sustainability of Cocoa ecosystem. A good example is “Dari K” based in Kyoto, Japan funded by Mr. Keiichi YOSHINO, a former investment banker. He is working together with farmers in Sulawesi Island, Indonesias. Chocolates and Cocoa related products of Dari K is “expensive” compared with mass production items. But, quality is marvelous. This is what a price should be. Indonesian farmers can invest in their Cocoa farm to sustain and develop more their business. I visited their Cocoa farm in Indonesia 2 and a half years ago. It was a long journey from Jakarta, but it was unforgettable experience for me to understand how local farmers and Dari K have worked for these several years.

    If you have chance to go to Kyoto, Dari K is a must place to visit and try delicious chocolates with a fair price. Some shop stuffs can speak English well and you can meet Mr. Yoshino, if lucky enough.

  • Nooooooo don’t take chocolate away from us. I had no idea this was even an issue. I’m one of the people that years ago thought a lot of the environmental protections were dumb. As I’ve got older it’s been somewhat clear that we need to not just take better care of the planet but some of the joys we have here.

  • This is very dangerous .... raw cacao is a critical ingredient for health - forget about the sweet stuff, raw cocoa powder can be important in cholesterol control, blood pressure control, heart disease prevention to name a few ... the flavonoid anti-oxidants can go a long way towards a healthy life

    Bananas have gone extinct more than once in modern history -- we find new genus. Mind boggling to think of all the change happening in our ecology and global value chains
