  • I love this. Having someone like Kevin Love shed light on mental health issues is extremely important to combat entrenched social pressure and societal expectations and make it easier for “normal” people to talk about what they’re going through.

The most important message: you’re not alone. Everyone struggles. And it’s okay.

  • To be brave enough to speak up even when it can cost you — rare indeed.

And yes there are those that see the most common of mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression as a weaknesses and a liability ... Kevin’s truth will give permission to others to not feel alone.

  • The headline says it all. Everyone, even the people who you THINK are doing ok, is going through something. Sometimes even the happiest people are wearing cracked shells hiding the troubles they are going through from within.

  • So interesting, especially in a time when barriers are being broken down and the membrane between sports and creativity is seeing a bit of permeability.

So interesting, especially in a time when barriers are being broken down and the membrane between sports and creativity is seeing a bit of permeability.

Kobe Bryant winning an Oscar for best animated short is actually really interesting in the context of notions of masculinity and what it means to be “cool” to a boy or young man. In his acceptance speech, Kobe said “as basketball players we’re just supposed to shut up and dribble the ball.” After reading this eloquent and touching piece from Kevin Love,

I hope people like Kobe and Kevin realize that now is the MOST important time for athletes and celebrities who display “traditional” traits of masculinity to show that they are multi faceted and that they have a complex range of emotions. We all need to learn to create and hold space for boys and young men who are struggling to express themselves as a result of systems that we’ve all created and been complicit in.

  • This is exactly why sites like The Player’s Tribune are so powerful. It allows a celebrity athlete to relate to their audiences and help them understand that even the biggest celebrities have their own problems.

  • Charles Barkley famously said “I am not a role model”, Kevin Love can’t say the same, I think his difficult admission makes him a role model to his peers as well as kids who believe playing sports is all about being tough and following a macho rule book.

  • Take a moment to read this, very important topic. I remember my first panic attack and know how it feels to deal with anxiety. Good on Kevin for using his platform to write about this topic.

  • Such an important message when everyone is comparing their mental struggles with the next person’s best Instagram post.

We are all going through the struggles of life. The more we share those with each other, the better off we’ll all be.

  • So many fans of sports, especially kids, are better off from seeing athletes share their challenges openly like this instead of the fake myths traditionally created about sports.

  • The Players Tribune at its best, e.g., essentially “Athletes: They’re Just Like Us!” Which is a really good point to hit home over and over. Especially about mental health issues.

  • It is impossible to separate your performance at work from your personal well being, and life at home. This kind of willingness to share deserves applause. We could all benefit from taking a moment to reflect on what we're going through.

  • Great reminder on how fragile life really is. Life works when everything is in balance. But sometimes, many times, life gets out of balance. Great reminder on how fragile life really is. Life works when everything is in balance. But sometimes, many times, life gets out of balance. All of a sudden, it seems life steps away from the “rules” we have been clinging to for a long time. When the unexpected happens, it takes a lot of courage, soul searching, community support, and inner compass to find your way back. Sharing with others, whether it is done one-on-one or through social media, connects us all. Thanks for the chance to read this article.

  • Powerful. Bravo. #truth

  • Something I think we forget when we look at those with elevated status.
