  • I love that the NFL is finally getting some competition, both from this league and the forthcoming reboot of the XFL. That said, other football leagues have consistently failed to attract loyal fanbases, and this will likely be no different. A couple things I'd love to see:

I love that the NFL is finally getting some competition, both from this league and the forthcoming reboot of the XFL. That said, other football leagues have consistently failed to attract loyal fanbases, and this will likely be no different. A couple things I'd love to see:

    1. Some kind of player contract innovation - offer lifetime healthcare, for instance. This would be difficult financially to pull off, but with NFL owners wielding as much power over their employees as they do, it would be great for players to have another option.

    2. Dispense with the collegiate requirement and allow drafting of players straight out of high school. This would likely make up a small portion of players, but it would be nice to see the NCAA get some legitimate competition. Maybe that would cause them to reconsider their annual exploitation of college athletes.

    3. Better media strategy - it sounds like they're trying to do something different with the "60% fewer commercials" shtick, but in my opinion, the NFL's greatest failure is how beholden it is to traditional TV networks. As a transplanted fan living far from the TV market of my home team, it is almost impossible to watch live games every week without paying an absurd price for NFL Sunday Ticket or some analogue. I would love to be able to pay a moderate monthly fee on an app (say, $5-$10?) in order to watch high quality streaming of my favorite team (emphasis on high quality,my experience with DirectTV Sunday Ticket in the past has been anything but). I don't care if I have to watch commercials like other viewers- in fact I'd prefer to "pay" using my time and attention (commercials) than pay with an expensive monthly subscription. I believe this is the direction all live sports should be moving, and there's no better method of disruption than watching an upstart league find success.

    Here's to hoping!

  • We have another new football league coming! The AAF has quite the backing both on VC and player backings. Also would love to see if Barstool will be deeply involved. Also is this the real first time we could potentially see ESPN and Barstool Sports members working together?

  • The NFL is an incredible monopoly. Displacing it seems like a great way to waste some money.

  • The USFL would have survived except for the egomaniac who insisted it move to the fall schedule to compete directly with the NFL, boneheaded business move long before the same egomaniac grabbed the Presidency #45thbest
