    Admittedly, I have very limited experience with virtual reality, having used it only a handful of times at exhibits or friends’ homes. However, the possibility of using the technology in storytelling is an exciting and powerful one. The immersive experience would allow for a more in-depth and altogether different type of experience. And the possibilities will allow for a level of experimentation and creativity unmatched since the early days of computer animation, when everything was new and experimental and rough but would ultimately lead to new ways of designing animation and telling stories. I look forward to seeing where this technology takes us.

I wonder how people would take to that? I know that 3D movies often make people feel nauseous or give them headaches. I wonder if a VR movie would have the same, or possibly worse effects? But perhaps either way it could be worth the profit.

  • If done right this would probably make a wonderful addition to that any moviegoers experience. However, one of the reasons that I had to stop going to the movies was because of the price. For instance, I really like going to see a movie on the big screen, but I find myself choosing not to because it cost so much. At this point if I really want to see a movie I have to consider matinee shows or any other discounted showing.

  • It’s true it will make the experience more interactive, whereby you’re thrust into the narrative to live the story side by side with the characters, but that doesn’t invalidate the 2D movie anymore than 2D movies invalidate books. It will be a shift in how we experience stories, and for better or worse become part of the entertainment landscape. It makes much more sense for games as that requires direct engagement, and movies require you to submit to the director’s whims, but the young will accept it more easily than us old folk. Just as my generation took to the first video games, or the kids from the 60s took to TV, but parents and grandparents thought it was dumb and the worst. Here we are.

We just don’t know, and more importantly, we just don’t think the experts, even the one’s on this panel know either. From a audience member perspective, it’s still difficult to really care about the technology....at least right now. What about investors? What about the folks who love to invest in emerging technologies? What does Mark Cuban think of VR movies? Does he have skin in the game? I honestly don’t know. I would be curious. I’m eager to see where the technology goes but just not curious enough to drop $14 at a VR kiosk at my local mall. Still, I’m not the least bit pessimistic. VR is absolutely the tech of the future and it’s not going to be long before most of us spend much of our time there.

"3D" alone is a fad that is slowly ruining the state of American cinema and its partly to do with the need for production companies to rapidly pump out bad movies

    3D TVs etc. are a pinnacle of niche fads that were really expensive for consumers and too short lived. VR so far seems to thrive in the video game market, where users are looking to become fully immersed, not taking the place of Daniel Craig in the next James Bond installment and charging you an astronomical price to do so. It loses the art of storytelling, in place for supporting more crappy movies.

    This quote summed up any positivity I would have on the topic: “Fundamentally, [VR]'s a different medium, so there is different storytelling things that you need to consider," said Reaugh. She said to consider two things that really help make a great story: "escape" and "empathy."
