  • Best thing that ever happened to the NYTimes was the Trump presidency. And as it turns out the decision that Arthur S made such as the pay wall also turned out to be well timed.

  • great to see the “failing nyt” doing well. whether u agree with their slant or not, our democracy will go to shit without investigative reporting and these guys do it better than anyone.

  • Trump has been so brilliant for the NYT. I’m sure he’s taking credit and he really deserves some, although it’s not the sort of headline generating credit, many of us would covet.

  • I'm not a financial advisor, but NYT seems like a blue chip to me. They're at the heart of every major initiative in media and technology. Every platform wants to work with them, they get invited to every beta, they're minting money off subscriptions. They can do whatever the heck they want.

  • What this piece doesn't say is that the number of new subs this quarter was down about two thirds from a year ago when the NYT was offering deep discounts and other incentives. That suggests that a lot of those subs didn't renew. And it coincides with a journalistic heyday for NYT.

    That's worrisome

    That's worrisome for growth.

You kind of just expect the ad revenue to stay flat/fall with each report, given what's happening in that part of the media business. But new subs/members are absolutely the core of the NYT's future/lifeblood.

  • Even though I get free access to NYT through work, I converted to a paid digital subscriber after the launch of The Daily - one of my favorite podcasts to listen to. I make sure it’s downloaded before getting into my car for my daily commute.

  • Here’s the real headline: Subscriptions and single-copy sales now comprise 63 percent of the company's revenues, against 30 percent for advertising. That figure is down from a 50 percent advertising contribution in 2011. Online ads are dying.

  • In all seriousness #NewsPicksUSA is to thank in part for this, as I myself joined NYT - WSJ - The NewYorker because of the App, as it helps bring to focus the most inspiring and interesting articles to light and create dialog around them.

  • I wonder if FB lost that amount in Q1.
