First Look At The Smartphone App That Will Kill The MetroCard
Coming soon to a turnstile near you. What they don’t show is the media/advertising layer that will sit on top of it. If the money helps fix the subway, that’s fine by me.
Finally! Cannot wait for this. Big contract for Cubic.
“The MTA signed a $573 million contract with Cubic last November. It plans to install 500 electric readers at 500 turnstiles and on 600 buses starting next May. And the entire system is expected to be converted to the new system by 2023.”

I kind of feel like other issues are maybe more pressing than the functional albeit old turnstile system. Like the constant delays, trains breaking down, signal issues, potential tunnel collapses, need for new tracks. But no, let’s spend half a billion (taxpayer) dollars on a fancy new app.
Thrilled this is on its way —presumably it solves the problem of running out of money just as you are dashing to catch a train. Incidentally, the video of the demo is complete rubbish —hope that’s not an early indictment of the company’s technology.
While this will definitely make things more convenient, the swipe card is not really a major pain point for public transportation in NYC. The bigger issue is around reliability and building a better multi-modal transportation system.
Yes. Yes. Yes. This is a great idea. I don’t love reaching for my metrocard and I won’t miss dealing with it. While the subway has terrible service these days, at least it will be easy to get into the station and then wait for the train to never come.
Looking forward to this — it was one of my favorite satires of living in Tokyo!
This IS great. Yes, there is something crazy about the fact the city does a better job of updating the way we pay for the subway than it does on keeping the trains and system updated and in good repair.
Can’t wait for this!!!
