These stories are sad. At the very least there is need for increased funding at the border to enable more families stay together. From what I gathered, there's only 3000 family units available. Trump has also enforced a law where all adults that come through the border illegally are prosecuted. First time is a misdemeanor- non-criminal. Second time or more is a felony- a criminal charge. When taken into custody, they cannot remain with their kids. But only those criminally prosecuted are taken. Afterwards, those who apply for asylum are kept and those who don't are deported on time spent. This means a lot of families are crossing illegally. A lot are seeking asylum afterwards. It all comes back to Congress. Congress can change the laws that require separation, increase funding to the border as an emergency, and make it easier for those who seek Asylum to do so legally. I understand the skepticism due to Trump's statements, but the President's job is to enforce the law. Congress has to fix this one.

  • Sorry but that’s the laws. I do feel for the children but at the end of the day this is known to those coming here and

should not be the responsibility of the US government to accommodate people trying to come into the country. As far as blaming this on one administration I believe you’ll see numbers

should not be the responsibility of the US government to accommodate people trying to come into the country. As far as blaming this on one administration I believe you’ll see numbers at the end of his term being much better than the previous one due to the increased presence at our boarder. The other issue is that the Obama administration held double the amount of kids in shelter that what Trumps is currently doing so I don’t understand why the sudden issue when this has been going on for a while. The liberal cause will at some point turn against one another just as we saw during the push for women’s rights back in the late 1800’s. Lastly, the idea that my tax dollars should be spent on this issue is troubling. Let’s address our own children first. Too many kids are living in poverty in America and have a small chance of ever making it out. I often wonder why the left hasn’t made it a focus to help our own children and instead fight hard for illegal immigrants.

  • Yes amazingly this “is the reality we live in.” While this may well deter others from crossing the border it will have left an indelible mark on those impacted but also on the US. What kind of people and country are we — where this is considered humane?

  • eight years of Obama's policy of ignoring the law of the land and making it status quo for people with children not being incarcerated, rather given a court date, to which no one attended. that is the cause of this problem. now the bleeding hearts are crying trump be cause the law is actually being enforced

eight years of Obama's policy of ignoring the law of the land and making it status quo for people with children not being incarcerated, rather given a court date, to which no one attended. that is the cause of this problem. now the bleeding hearts are crying trump be cause the law is actually being enforced as it should have been before. this was an essentially open border situation under that last administration which only required you to have a child in tow to secure a place in the us. what can you do to reinstitute some semblance of border control? start enforcing the laws again. It really sucks that previous administrations set this precident. but they did and that is where the blame lies. in a perfect world i would love to welcome anyone and everyone to our great country for a better life. but pragmatism needs to take the wheel here. It's not sustainable.

  • Trump is doing his job why do Dems want us invaded??? stay where you are with your million kids!!! they are doing it to themselves !! Stop Coming here everything isn’t free anymore media lies lies lies parents are idiots putting your children through this!!!!!! take cate of your own kids

Meanwhile, inside our borders, Child Protective Services exceeds 50 per day rate for child removal. As police/CPS workers place children into more safe environments, they note that it is usually due to the parent's illegal behavior.

  • That’s such a shame. Zero empathy for these children. Change the law then.

  • The issue isn’t just that this is happening but he demanded congress to fix this because he claims he cares and when they come up with a solution he says he will veto it. Trump likes the optics of separating kids from their parents because some segment of his base likes that. It makes them feel like

The issue isn’t just that this is happening but he demanded congress to fix this because he claims he cares and when they come up with a solution he says he will veto it. Trump likes the optics of separating kids from their parents because some segment of his base likes that. It makes them feel like he is fighting for them and removing illegals and it’s not about economic anxiety as man have alluded to it’s about keeping different cultures, races and nationalities out. When you watch and listen to many conservatives they are more brazen about their interest in keeping a white majority as they see on the horizon a non white majority.

  • This will not prevent people from crossing the border. Taking kids away from their parents is going to create a major problem for the court systems and we will end up paying for all of it in the name of immigration reform.

  • Although it sounds devastated for the children, from outside perspective, the parents need pay off for the illegal stay. If the Mexican authorities found an American holding no official visa, they would take the same action.
