But what if you want to go a little bit deeper than just an equation (so we can change stuff)? One common idea is to assume there is a frictional force pushing the human forward and a velocity-dependent drag force pushing against the motion. As the speed of the human increases, so does the drag force, until you get to a 'terminal velocity' where the two forces are balanced."

    I don't like this approach (even though you can get it to fit the data fairly well). If air resistance were really the thing that limits running speed, then it would seem like you could go super fast on a stationary treadmill (you can't). Also, a tail wind would provide a huge boost (it only gives a tiny boost). Finally, you could run at crazy-fast speeds in a vacuum (who knows about this one)."

No amount of hydrodynamics is going to change that.

    Theoretically, a person the size, weigh, age, and height, of Usain Bolt, should be able to achieve his magnificent feats. But we all know that, not to be the case.! Some may say his height plays an advantage, although that maybe true, it is yet to be proven by any NBA player. Because in theory at least, James Lebron should be able to shatter his records.

    I’ll never forget how I felt the first time I saw Usain Bolt run in the Beijing Olympics. I do not recall standing up, or cheering as loud as I was told I did, nor why I cried uncontrollably when he crossed the line and shattered the record. But it appears that I do that a lot every time I witness, the magic Mankind is able to impart, and I hope it never seizes to amaze me.

    It continues to reinforce the believe that we are more than the sum of our achievements. That there is more to us than meets the eye. That there is still so much we have to learn about who we are, and what we can be. That we haven’t peaked or reached our limits just yet!

    For what is there can still surpass, our wildest dreams. Keep the hope alive!
