Good morning, Quartz readers!

Hereā€™s what you need to know

Johnson & Johnson delayed the start of vaccinations in Europe. The EU was due to begin administering the jabs this week. Separately, the US recommended pausing use of the shots over concerns about blood clots.

India is speeding up vaccine approval. The country will authorize shots that have already been given the nod by the WHO, the US, Europe, the UK, or Japan. Pfizer, which withdrew an application for its jab in February, said it will seek approval now that import rules have been relaxed.

Joe Biden pushed back the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. Troops will leave the country by Sept. 11, rather than the May 1 deadline set by Donald Trump.

China imported a record amount of US goods in the first quarter. But exports to the US grew even faster, widening the trade imbalance between the two countries.

A US intelligence report found China is its biggest threat. The annual assessment called China a ā€œnear-peer competitorā€ for its military, economic, and technological prowess.

Grab confirmed its SPAC plans. The Singapore-based startup said it will merge with Altimeter Growth Capital and trade on New Yorkā€™s Nasdaq; the $40 billion deal will be the largest of its kind.

What to watch for

Will Coinbase become the most valuable publicly listed exchange on the planet? Thatā€™s what investors (and a few envious exchange CEOs) will be watching to see when the crypto platform begins trading on Nasdaq today. Some estimates indicate the eight-year-old company could be valued at $100 billionā€”nearly double that of Intercontinental Exchange, operator of the New York Stock Exchange and other important venues.

A chart showing global exchange operators by market capitalization, with Coinbase far exceeding the second on the list, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing.

The offering is a direct listing instead of a traditional IPO. That means the market, rather than the underwriting investment banks, will determine the opening trading price for Coinbase shares under the ticker COIN. If the companyā€™s stock trades anything like bitcoin and the other crypto assets that change hands on its exchange, get ready for a rollercoaster.

Charting Twitch fans

Twitch viewership doubled during lockdown, but mostly, users werenā€™t logging on to see epic zombie battles or car chasesā€”they tuned in for the far less dramatic experience of watching people sit in front of their webcams and talk.

A chart showing the rise of Twitch viewership during the pandemic, which reached 6.34 billion hours viewed, more than double where it was before the pandemic began.

Inveterate gamers once used to ridicule users, often women, who were too into chatting and not enough into playing, which resulted in its own kind of inherent sexism. Three years ago, Twitch spun the feature off into ā€œJust Chattingā€ and once Covid-19 put a serious damper on in-person chatting, the category exploded.

Weā€™d all do well to keep up, as video game live streaming may be the future of entertainment.

Could you handle being a pandemic health minister?

Austriaā€™s health minister Rudolf Anschober resigned yesterday, in the middle of a ā€œthird waveā€ of coronavirus infectionsā€”itā€™s not the only country to have had trouble keeping that role filled.

Before you start brushing off your CV, letā€™s take a look at some territory that seems to come with the job:

šŸ˜“ You wonā€™t be able to catch many hours of sleep, but, hey, you could catch Covid-19!

šŸ”Ŗ When your head of state makes bad decisions you may have to take the blameā€”even if their supporters threaten your life.

ā˜ ļø In fact, you should probably get used to death threats.

šŸ¤ You probably wonā€™t get a lot of praise for a job well done. (But you might get an embarrassing nickname.)
