What to watch for today
Censored 9/11 documents may be released. Twenty-eight classified pages from a congressional inquiry are expected to be made public. The families of 9/11 victims who are suing Saudi Arabia think the pages may contain evidence linking the kingdom’s government to the attacks.
Donald Trump announces his VP pick. Republican officials have been told that Mike Pence, the Republican governor of Indiana, will be named as Trump’s running mate, though there is always the possibility of a surprise reversal. Pence previously denounced Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim immigrants and is a strong free trade proponent.
China reports GDP growth for the second quarter. Economists expect expansion to slow to 6.6%, from the 6.9% pace it reported last year—though the statistic is widely considered to be flawed. The country is struggling with an economic slowdown and questions about the health of its financial system.

A truck crashed into a large crowd of Bastille Day revelers in Nice. Local media report that about 30 people were killed and many more wounded. Details are still emerging.
The Bank of England threw a curveball. The central bank kept interest rates at the same low level they’ve been at for the last seven years, despite a widespread expectation that the Brexit vote would trigger a rate cut. A rate cut next month is now looking very likely.
Line started trading with a bang. In the largest tech IPO of 2016, the Japanese messaging app’s shares jumped 36%, valuing the company at $9.3 billion. Line’s user base is still tiny compared to Facebook and WeChat, but it hopes to use supercute stickers to expand beyond its user base in Asia.
JPMorgan Chase had a good day. Kicking off earning season for Wall Street, the company beat analyst profit and revenue targets, driving up its shares. CEO Jamie Dimon attributed the results to rising deposits, lending, and credit card sales.
Bayer upped the ante for Monsanto. The German chemical giant is now offering almost $55 billion for the US pesticide and seed company, after upping its bid from $122 to $125 per share. Monsanto may also receive an offer from Bayer’s archrival BASF.
EU opened a new front in its fight against Google. The third round of antitrust charges since 2015 claim that the tech giant’s advertising products restrict choice and harm consumers. Google could face up to $7 billion in fines.
