With more bikes than cars, Copenhagen has to deal with a new kind of traffic jam

The number of bikes surpassed the number of cars in Copenhagen for the first time last year, with 265,700 bikes to 252,600 cars.

But now Copenhagen has to deal with bike congestion that forces cyclists to fight for space and increases the likelihood of accidents.

Copenhagen is installing five electronic screens that inform cyclists of less congested bike lanes. The panels also indicate where roadwork is happening.

Copenhagen is also enlarging bike lanes and making signs clearer. It has to—bike traffic, which already grew 68% in 20 years, is expected to increase 25% by 2025.
