There is a surge of smoking in American movies

Actors are smoking more in popular movies in the US, with an increase of 72% in appearances of tobacco on screen between 2010 and 2016.

There were about 1,820 occurrences of tobacco in the most popular movies of 2010, and about 3,140 in 2016, according to a report published in July.

The count includes regular and electronic cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. It covers a collection of the 10 most popular movies in the US in every week of each year.

The increase in depictions of smoking was sharper in movies recommended for adults (rated R), like Baby Driver and The House.

But there was also a surge in movies that can be watched by teenagers (rated PG-13), like Transformers and Wonder Woman.

Young people who are more heavily exposed to cigarettes on screen are almost three times more likely to start smoking than those less exposed.
