The garage is located below Utrecht’s central railway station. It has space for 6,000 bikes. It will be expanded and capable of holding 12,500 bikes by the end of 2018.

But that is not enough, according to Fietsersbond, a group that lobbies for cyclists in various cities in the Netherlands.

People in Utrecht make four out of every 10 short trips on bikes. And that share only grows. There will soon be a need for more spots, the group believes.

Other European cities are also dealing with an increase in bicycle usage. With more bikes than cars, Copenhagen began installing screens informing cyclists of less congested lanes.
