Europe does not have enough factories to produce those batteries, so Volkswagen has to buy from Asia, mostly from South Korea.

For now. Vehicle makers and electronics makers are planning or already building large battery factories in Germany, Sweden, Hungary, and Poland.

And Volkswagen is asking European companies to join forces to create a continental battery hub to compete with Asian and American manufacturers.

Those new plants will contribute to the tripling of the battery production capacity of the world, from 103 GWh per year in 2017 to 278 GWh per year in 2021.
