China is one of the biggest polluters in the world, but at least according to one measure—public investment in renewable energy—it’s trying the hardest to clean its record.

Out of the $279.8 billion invested in renewable energy around the world in 2017, China spent the most, with $126.6 billion, followed by far by the US, with $40.5 billion.

Things could get even worse for the US. Investment in renewable energy dropped 6% between 2016 and 2017, the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency. Meanwhile, Chinese investment increased 30%.
