Battery prices jumped more than 8% over the past year in the US, despite a drop in demand

The average price of disposable batteries in the US increased 8.2% since last year, four times the price growth rate of other products in the same segment, even as disposable batteries head towards obsolescence.

Average prices have grown, from $6 in 2013 to $7 in 2018, even as sales dropped, from 386 million units to 346 million over the same period.

Part of the reason is the dominance of the two largest brands in the US. Duracell and Energizer own almost 80% of the market, according to the Wall Street Journal.

And Energizer is planning to buy Rayovac, the third largest firm, which could further reduce alternatives for consumers and enable more price increases.
