Over 4,500 companies have abandoned Catalonia for other Spanish regions since the independence vote

Legislators in Catalonia elected Quim Torra, a staunch separatist, to lead the region on Monday (May 15). Catalonia had been without a president since a controversial and failed declaration of independence in October.

Over the past six months, almost 4,560 firms moved their bases from Catalonia to other regions of Spain. Most changed their headquarters from Barcelona to Madrid.

Just the largest 60 of those firms are responsible for 5.4% of the region’s GDP and 2.6% of its jobs. They include the bank Sabadell, real estate firm Colonial, and media group Planeta.
