Discerning consumers are driving up the price of vanilla—and causing a mess in Madagascar
The price per kilo of vanilla beans jumped from $25 in 2009 to $240 in 2016.

The rise is due in part because many consumers now want natural vanilla without synthetic ingredients.
Coupled with a bad crop last year, the price should grow even more, almost doubling to $450 per kilo by mid-2017.
